Firefox theme with no Firefox
Oct 19th, 2005 by Neo
It feels good to see some blogs are using the Firefox theme that I did for WordPress, although some of them customized the theme a little bit, especially the top graphic. Most of them removed the Firefox logo completely, now I understand some people may not like Firefox very much
I don’t mind blog owners customizing it, in fact I would like to see people customizing it because I like creative work, provided you credit me by not removing the link to my blog.
Some of the blogs that are using the theme:
http://richard.smithuk.blogdns.org/
http://www.sanbenito.edu.gt/blogs/
http://awangshamsul.net/
http://www.chengfu.net/
http://www.tresalgo.com/naro/
I also received some feedbacks and requests to remove the Firefox logo.
Okay folks, here you are:

I personally prefer this one because with the Firefox tail, it looks more balanced and harmony.

This is the one that’s completely plain. If you use this one, I suggest you to put in some picture or wording in the right end.

Hi,
I am thankful also that you allow me to customized mine.
I love Firefox, but… didn’t use firefox theme, use the browser good enough liao. but then from my stat count I can see only 29% of my reader using Firefox, and still 49% using IE.
why they don’t use FF? it is so good!
Hi! It’s again me… remeber that i was changing something on your theme? Well, i was about to change a part of the Index of the theme… but i found that the thing i should change doesn’t exist… so i came to you to ask if you know where does this thing is:
while (have_posts()) : the_post();
of if it’s an similar calling in the index… i want to implement a thing named “asides” and i need to find that function!
Could you help me?
Thnx in advance!
Hi Naro, it is in the file page.php.
Ohhh right now i can see it… =) haaa now we can see if the implement works. If now i’ll hit mi face in the monitor.
Thank you ^^
Great theme - Bolo’s blog is using this too :]
Outstanding!
I downloaded the template before I even knew you had allowed everybody to customize the header image without the firfox logo.
Keep up the excellent work!
Well, I live in Israel and Naturaly my blog is in hebrew. but I really liked your theme so I had to do a lot of work in order that Hebrew would be displayed correctly. also moved the side bar to the left insted of to the right (hebrew is read from right to left).
anyhow, I’m very pleased with this theme and ofcorse I’ve left the creadit though I’ve translated it to hebrew.
you are welcome to come and see.
http://nitzan.kicks-ass.net
am using it in an arbic site ..
so thank you for your nice theme ..
i meant arabic not arbic …
mistype issue
Thanks!
Any chance of changing the footer gradient image to remove the Firefox reference there?
Hi Josh,
I have not made a version of the footer gradient image without the Firefox wording.
Anyway, if you know some Photoshop, it would be very easy for you to get rid of the Firefox reference in the image, and replace it with something else.
Cheers.
For some reason your theme is not working anymore (until yesterday, it was fine!). When I enter any site using your theme today, I get simple text (no images, no format) display. Do you know what is going on?
Carlos, from my computer, your blog/website looks perfectly fine to me. There are images and the format is fine.
The problem you were facing probably could be due to slow Internet connection?
Interesting… after a few minutes that I posted that comment, everything was fine again. I didn’t change anything, so it is a mistery
Looks like wordpress could not retrieve the CSS or something like this.
Well, everything is fine now. Thanks!
Hi Jacky!
I got 2 simply questions to you about the FF-theme:
1. Would you be so kind and make the theme WP-2.0.1-compatible?
I had to fix several things due to XHTML used by WP 2.0(.1) resulted in errors in FF..
2. Watching your site in FF and then IE shows (except font sizes, but that’s IE ;)) me the theme as it was/is meant to be. But watching my site in FF and then IE results in different layouts of the page, especially the right boxes..
I think, this is related to WP-2.0(.1) due to you’re using WP-1.5 and your theme is displayed correctly..
Therefore, again, is there any chance for a WP-2.0.1-compatible version?
Kindly regards,
Martin..
Forgot a third question:
Is it possible that you modify the header/footer so that the “shadow” to the left and right of your theme is also displayed at the top and the bottom? Maybe with rounded corners?
Hi Martin,
Thank you for dropping by and posting the comments.
I think not in the near future due to my current workload. I may not upgrade to WP2 just yet as there are some compatibiity issues to some of the plugins that I am using.
On the rounded corners, this is easier. But again, I am rushing for a few projects at the moment… so, once again have to disappoint you.
Thanks again
Hi Jacky!
First of all: yes, finally you’ve received my mail (had some troubles with Thunderbird which doesn’t seem to work with the proxy..)!
Secondly, sounds like heavy load of work, right?
Well, I know that your projects have a higher priority (I would handle it the same way.. ;)). But could you tell me something like an estimated date? Not like “March, 13th 2006″, but maybe something like “within the next 8 or 10 weeks”?
And maybe I can handle the WP2-problems with your theme - if so, I’ll send you the changed stuff..
Cheers,
Martin..
Martin, if youself would like to upgrade the theme to WP2, then please go ahead. And yes, please send me a copy of the stuff when completed
Cheers,
Jacky.
Jacky,
I’m offering a deal:
As soon as my exams are done (last one will be completed on February, 24th), I’ve got some more leisure time and then, I’ll play around with your theme and hopefully solve the remaining issues..
But you’ll be doing the rounded corners as quickly as you can when you got enough time - sounds good, right?
(And one wish from my side: please make a footer where “Firefox” and “take back the web” are better readable (IMHO the transparency is too high and/or the blue “course” (I don’t know the correct term for that..) shouldn’t fade away so quickly ;))..
Regards,
Martin..
Love the theme - I have a question. How do I get rid of all the white space between posts? In other words, I want to shrink the area between the the end of the post and the next post’s title. Thanks.
Hi,
no problem at all - there you’ll go:
Inside the admin panel, go to Presentation -> Theme Editor -> choose “post.php” from the right.
When the file is loaded into the textarea, just remove the line which looks like this:
(It should be the line before the last one.. ;))
If that isn’t enough (or does not work - I didn’t test my suggestion..), you’ll probably have to go inside the CSS-file and modify the appropriated entry..
HTH,
Martin..
Sorry, the code I wrote was interpreted instead ofthat it was shown, so here’s the code you have to remove from that file once again:
(Just remove the extra spaces between the ;))
DAMN IT!
Well, then this way:
div class=”post-footer” & nbsp ; /div
Just add 2 @ div and /div..
OK, Jakcy wants me to do it again just once more:
<div class=”post-footer”> </div>
BTW: *spam* *LOL*

Well, I wanted the footer to remain, so I edited the stylesheet and got rid of some of it. Thanks for your help.
I like the theme, but I want it for a different purpose. Could I get the source file for the image? Thank you.
-Victor
Taylor,
you’re welcome and I enjoy it to help people..
Victor,
your request is great, because as I’m going to release a WP 2.0.1-compatible version I need the sources, too.
Therefore I’m dropping a line to him, right after posting this..
Cheers,
Martin..
Well, it’s a pitty, but he didn’t reply..
Nice theme, I want to use it on our foundation site, but There are no comments on the static pages/ How can I get this please?
I don’t know anything about coding into PHP.
With regards Harry
a really great theme, i like it very much! so i customized it a little bit. you can have a look at www.stefan-lehnert.de.
thank you for the great work!
stefan
Harry, you can try this. In the firefox theme folder, there is this file called page.php. Edit this file. Put the following code:
<?php comments_template(); ?>
between:
<?php the_content(); ?> and
<?php link_pages(’<p><strong>Pages: ‘, ‘</p>’, ‘number’); ?>
Hope that helps. Happy blogging
Hey Jacky,
excuse me if I sound a little bit “hard”, but why do you reply to Harry and the question (it’s about releasing the theme’s “source code”, that means: giving the Photoshop-files to him and to me, because I’d like to get rounded corners at the top and bottom and I’d like to change the header-image, too) of Victor and me is being ignored?! :’(
I even wrote a mail via the contact form but till now you didn’t reply (the mail was sent 2 weeks ago or so)..
Thanks in advance,
Martin..
A fast response to this Martin,
“giving the Photoshop-files to him and to me” First I don’t have the photoshop files of this. second, It was only a question about a little peace of extra code.
Thanks, and success.
Harry
P.s. I use the theme with version 2.0.1 and costumized a little bit of myself.
Hi folks, here you go. The Firefox theme’s photoshop file, you can download it here http://www.hot-screensaver.com/wp-myimages/firefox-theme.zip
Should you customize the theme by using this photoshop file, or the source code, appreciate if you could provide proper credit by linking to this page or my main page http://www.hot-screensaver.com
Let me know if you face any problem.
Martin, apologize for the long delay. This should be what you need
Harry,
I didn’t speak about you..

Instead, I was speaking to Jacky to express my wish for the PSD-File(s)..
I apologize, if there was any confusion..
Jacky,
thanks - it’s just great!

A little question, though: where’s the layer with the footer?
Could you be so kind and release a PSD with the footer included into the PSD?
Also, I’d like to know the name of the font you’ve used for the theme due to I don’t have it..
The link to your blog is just one part of the credits I’m going to give to you.. The theme is simply awesome and you’re a very nice guy - this should be honored and I’ll do so, just give me some time and you’ll see..
The font is Fujiyama2.
Just now, when I tried to look for the footer PSD I realised that I didn’t save it last time. Anyway, it’s just a simple one with a fading background and some words in the foreground. Should you really need this, I guess I can just recreate one for you.
Thanks a lot, Jacky!
Well, I think I can create it myself..
Hopefully there’ll be a 2.0.1-version finished till end of march - I’ll do my very best, I promise!
Hi Jacky,
Thanks for this nice theme.I use theme too but i modified the header with my own picture. You can see this @ http://romanhaug.de
nice work..
bye bye
Hi Jacky!
I justed wanted to announce the final state of the 2.0-compatible version of your original theme!
It was quite hard to do all the work - especially because I’ve included the ability for user-defined headers as I like random headers and therefore I’ve modified your Photoshop file a lot..
Anyway, due to problems with my computer (I’m currently browsing your blog via my notebook.. ;)) I’m not able to upload the stuff because the other computer has no mainboard and the theme files are on the hard drive of that computer..
But within the next 2 or 3 weeks this should be fixed, the HTML- and CSS-code, too - and then, the next generation is coming alive..
Regarding your wish about telling people who originally created the theme, I’m going to do it in a way like this:
Firefox theme 2.0 by Martin Baranski (my name is linking to my blog)
Original theme by Jacky Kong (your name links to your blog ;))
Hopefully this is acceptable for you.. - If not, just drop me a note and I’ll modify it to match your wish(es)..
Kindly regards,
Martin..
Hi Martin,
Glad to hear that you have more or less completed the WP2 compatible version of the theme.
Yes, your suggestion sounds OK.
Can’t wait to see the updated Firefox Theme
Hi Martin, no news regarding Firefox Theme v. 2.0? I can’t wait any longer
OK, guys!
Hold tight and take a deep - no, *very* deep - breathe and listen to my “sounds”..
First of all, the negative facts: the version I’m going to release will use the same administrative interface as Jackys version does.
And now, let’s go to the positive facts (Yes, that’s all for the negative part - nothing more to come.. :D):
The development is almost finished - only some issues regarding the position of some elements are left to fix.
Hopefully, Jacky won’t get too angry after he has seen the new version, because due to plugin-compatibility (I’m using a plugin for random header-images..) I had to change some theme-parts..
If he doesn’t like that, it won’t be a problem to change that - but lets wait till he speaks about his thoughts regarding my theme-version..
Lastly, there’s one problem: I got some reexaminations and therefore it’s currently impossible for me to work on the remaining issues.
Please be patient and I promise that I’ll release the theme as soon as possible.
Because of that I know how unspecific “as soon as possible” is, I’m giving you a date!
If everything goes right and nothing keeps me away from developing, the theme will be released on June, 11th 2006!
A first preview will be released within the next 2 days - but it will be only a JPEG-file..
Regards,
Martin..
OK, guys!
After I had posted the message above this one, I had a strange feeling in my mind.. When I say “strange”, I mean something like “What about working on the theme right NOW?”..
So, in short and clean words: I left my exercises for my studies and worked all night long on the theme - just to present you this:
http://www.compu-lex.de/FF_V2_Preview.jpg
So, how do you think about it? Does it kick ass? Or should I throw it all away?
Before writing something, listen first:
I *know* that some parts (link colors, this and that.. ;)) are not matching the theme - it’s a preview, so what did you expect?
I *know* you (maybe) want a header without the Firefox-logo - hey, I took the header of this website for the preview because I’m using a plugin for random headers and therefore I’ve got several other headers..
Also, I want to announce that the following plugins are supported by default (and I strongly recommend these plugins):
~> Plugin for Wikipedia-search for a specific date
~> Plugin for time calculation (”Posted X weeks ago”, it’s called “time since”)
~> Plugin for “life calculation” (”Blogging since X days”, it’s called “days since birth” or something like that ;))
~> Plugin for displaying a calendar at the sidebar (I’m using this one: http://n0id.hexium.net/wp-plugins/ - but you can use the one you like, because there’s no special support for a specific calendar :))
~> Plugin for counting the blocked spammers (it’s called “Akismet spam count” or something like that ;))
Note: it’s not absolutely needed due to I’ve included a check for this plugin and if there’s no such plugin, a default message (displaying “all” instead of a number) will be shown
~> Plugin for speed calculation (you know that “rendered in X by executing Y”.. ;))
If you do not want to use any (or all) of these plugins, the theme should still work just fine. Though, the layout maybe doesn’t look like expected and then, you’ll have to modify the source code..
Hi Martin.
the theme looks very good. nice work. if you finished the work i will test the new theme @my page.
Regards Roman
Roman,
thank you very much!
Due to the fast progress I’ve made again last night, I think, the theme could be release by the end of this month - at least when nothing goes wrong..
Cheers,
Martin..
Hey guys - you want more?
No, no, I mean: YOU WANT MORE?
OK, here we go: http://www.problemzone.net/
You’re asking what you can see there? - Well, in short words: the first live-version of Firefox V2, running!!
That means, the step of building a HTML-file is done and the conversion into a file with php-snippets is almost done..
Lastly, there’re some bugs left to solve (as you can see at the URL above, too). But unfortunately, I have to pause the development, because I’m at a point now where I decide about my future: passing the tests or getting kicked out.. - And I really like to study as you maybe understand..
So please be patient - the theme is almost done!
Cheers,
Martin..
Hey guys,
I’ve got some good news:
First of all: I had some minutes of leisure time and therefore I could work on the theme again..
As you can see on my blog (just click my name ;)), the theme now looks also in Internet Explorer quiet good - not at its best, but as the name states, it’s for FIREFOX (or in other words: it uses code which is validate) and I can tell you that it’s such a pain to make code “IE-compatible”!!
I mean, I wrote the source code and it looked just fine in Firefox - after a quick visit in IE, I had thrown away this statement and started to work on the compatibility.
Now, after 6 (repeat: S-I-X!!!) hours of painful programming it seems that the theme works with IE, too.
Don’t bother me with comments like “In Firefox, the headline has a better position than in IE!” - it’s a piece of crap what IE makes out of a css-statement, telling a <h1>-element to be in a specific size and at a specific position..
Anyway, I’ve chosen to strike a balance between “perfect Firefox”- and “IE-compatible”-look..
To do so, I’m using Firefox 1.5.0.3 and IE 6.0 SP1 - so if the theme doesn’t look good, maybe your browser is too old (IE is always too old because it doesn’t always understand the *correct* CSS-syntax)..
You maybe want to check back here (or at my blog) for updates - I’m developing the theme “live” that means not on my hard disk - instead, I’m doing it directly with my current WordPress-installation..
Cheers,
Martin..
Oh, I’ve forgotten to write what’s left to be done:
~> Comments-page
~> Blog entry-detail
~> Layout of pages
~> Search (result)-page
~> in other words: everything that is not looking good on my blog (these are almost all pages except the frontpage)..
OK guys, here’s something more:
Two of five tests are done and right now, there’s a little bit of leisure time, so I continue the development!
I’m currently dealing with the single-post file which is shown when a user reads a single post.
After that, the comments-file will be adjusted for the theme..
I’ve also increased compatibility with IE - if something doesn’t exactly look like in Firefox, please don’t bother me. I do my very best! But for me, the main thing is valid source code and *not* a piece of software with tons of hacks just to ensure that a browser which breaks nearly all rules of the W3C renders a page correctly..
I hope you like the news, don’t you?
Cheers & hopefully Neo doesn’t kill me because of that I’m writing so many comments,
Martin..
thanks for the theme
i got it installed on my blog
www.saptha.com/blog
Hey guys,
time for an update, right?
Tests for my studies are almost finished, only two tests left (but one of them is the hardest one, though)..
Working on the theme continues, too. Right now, source code for viewing a single entry is under development - the part for the post is done, but the comments-part still needs some work..
Also, I’d like to announce that due to the fast progress I make, the theme should be released till mid-June!
Cheers,
Martin..
Time for good new, guys!
Development has reached the next step: comments are done - archives and categories are the next big thing and then, well, I think that’s it!
So the development is almost finished and till now, there are many plugins supported by default! That said, there’s no need for editing files to get supported plugins working!
In case you want a list, here’s a short (but *not* complete) overview:
Time since, Calendar (not the Event Calendar!), Gravatars, Akismet spam count, Days since birth, Subscribe to comments, etc.
Lastly, I’d like to announce a major change: my domain has moved from problemzone.net to troublezone.net - please keep that in mind when you’re checking for updates or something like that..
(Yes, the old domain is still working, but it will be deleted soon!)
Regards,
Martin..
Hey guys,
right now, I’ve finished the archive and the category-part is done, too!
The things left to do are:
Fixing minor bugs, completing the code (search results need some more code) and lastly ensure the (very annoying) compatibility with IE.. - This takes most of the time, so blame Microsoft, not me..
Anyway, keep in mind that the theme’s URL has changed: http://www.troublezone.net/ is its new home!
Cheers,
Martin..
P. S.: Yes, the release date is still not mentioned, so here it is: around the end of this month (June)!
Short news flash:
if everything goes on like expected, the theme will be released this weekend!
Cheers,
Martin.. *hittingthekeyboardlikeafreak*
!!Last newsflash before the release!!
Theme-development is finished - yes, your eyes read the right words!
There’s nothing that is left to be done! - OK, that’s not totally true because of this browser.. I can’t remember its name right now.. Sorry..
So here’s what I’m going to do next:
1. Hitting the power button of my monitor and then..
2. .. going to bed - I need to sleep (It’s 04:01 AM here!)..
3. After awakening from sleep, I’m going to put all the CSS-stuff into the “style.css”-file (right now, everything is controlled in-line) and..
4. .. start the Bugfix-procedure which shouldn’t take that long.
So as promised today, erm yesterday, sunday will be the release date for “Firefox V2″!
Cheers, good night and see you later,
Martin..
Sunday is gone and no Firefox V2 theme yet
Please Martin, could you give us some news about it?
Thanks in advance!
Well,
here in Germany, we got a saying: “A good thing takes awhile” (hopefully a suitable translation ;)) - an English one is maybe “More haste, less speed.”, although not identical..
Anyway, let’s go ahead, straight to the good news: theme is done - and I mean *done*!
The very last remaining thing is the CSS-file which needs still some comments.
But to continue the good news: the theme will be published today - yes, you’re reading correctly!
Is that a suitable answer?

Hey guys,
guess what: it’s done - REALLY DONE!!!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t release it as stated yesterday. But this time, it wasn’t me - it was the server here at the university’s dormitory which blocked my connection due to a mistake in the IP-resolving procedure..
Anyway, the theme is release - GO, GET IT! NOOOW!!!
Just visit my block after 23:33 (CEST) and you’ll finde the post and the according files..
Cheers,
Martin..
P. S.: Jacky, what about a link-exchange?
Martin,
Looks great! How do you propose the link exchange?
Jacky,
thanks a lot, man!
It was a very tough job, but now, after all the work is done, I feel good - *really* good!
Also, I have to say “Thanks” again and again, because if you haven’t released the source files, I’d have probably never released such a theme..
Regarding the link exchange, I think about putting link(s) on each blog and as you might have noticed, there’s already a link in the theme’s footer referring to your blog..
I have put a link in the “Links”-category, too.
If you like, drop me a note by mail to discuss this further - or right here in the comments, just as you like.
Cheers,
Martin..
Thank you for this very nice Theme. Easy to costumizes and easy to understand. And i love firefox.
Greetings to you
Dragan
