China’s Splendid Paper Cut
Dec 16th, 2005 by Neo
During my recent trip to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China, I have the opportunity to witness Chinese Folk Art - Paper Cuts with my very own eyes. It was truely very astonishing to see how this fella can cut out a person’s charateristics to near perfection in less than 10 seconds.
See the picture below.

Silhouette finished within ten seconds, how amazing is that? I can’t even draw that in less than 10 seconds. In the center, the fella was concentrating on his work for a young girl in front of him. The girl counldn’t even stand still for a few seconds and was peeping the fella playing skillfully with the scissors. In front of the desk, to the right of the picture, my tour mates were checking out some of the masterpieces on display.
They later decided to give it a try… Let’s see how the paper cuts turned out.

There, this was what one of my tour mate got. The left picture shows the cover, and the inside is the actual paper cut - the finished silhouette. What do you think? Do you think the owner of this face is very pretty?
In my opinion, the silhouette didn’t look like the owner very much, although some of the most significant characteristics and features, such as the hair style were captured. It costed RMB20, roughly equivalent to RM10. For less than 10 seconds of work, easy money eh?
Oh, before I forgot, this fella can be found near to the main entrance in China Folk Culture Village, Shenzhen, China; which is adjacent to Splendid China Miniature Scenery Park. More information on China Folk Culture Village can be found on orientaltravel.com.
