Magnificent Golden Bauhinia Square in Hong Kong
Dec 17th, 2005 by Neo
On our first morning in Hong Kong, the weather was brilliant. We visited the magnificent Golden Bauhinia Square, situated outside of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

A flag-raising ceremony is held there every day at 8:00am. But we were not able to witness this as we only reached there in a big bus occupying about 25 persons at about 9:30am. Sometimes, a big group of people makes arranging tours more difficult.
Bauhinia is actually a type of flower, and this is also the city flower for Hong Kong. You can find this on the Hong Kong flag and also on their coins. The Golden Bauhinia Square was named after the giant statue of a golden bauhinia at the centre of the square. This place is very special to the Hong Kong people and also to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) government because this was where the ceremony of the return of the former British Colony to the People’s Republic of China, and the establishment of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong was held in July 1997.

The Golden Bauhinia is a gift from the people of the PRC to mark the widespread joy of the Chinese at the return of the territory to the Motherland after 156 years. We were told by our guide that it is made of real gold. Wow, that must be heavily expensive, and very generous for the people of the PRC!
Further information on this magnificent place can be found on Discover Hong Kong, including directions of getting there in MTR.
