No More Chicken, It’s Dog’s Year
Jan 13th, 2006 by Neo
The Chinese Calendar named Year 2006 as the Year of the Dog. There are basically 12 animals in this naming system, which are the rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Each year is designated by one of these animals; for instance 2003 is the Year of the Sheep, 2004 is the Year of the Monkey, 2005 is the Year of the Rooster, and 2006 is of course the Year of the Dog.

The naming is recycled every 12 years.
This system is very practical and fun. For example, a child does not have to calculate in order to answer the question “How old are you?”. Just remember in what animal year he or she was born. Old people often lose track of their age, because they are rarely asked about their age. Every one just have to remember that he or she was born in the “Year of the Dog” or whatever…
Now, I am in no way an expert in Chinese calendar system. The above is just what I know from old folks and from searches on the Internet. In order to welcome the doggy year, a friend of mine forwarded me a very interesting piece of animation which says “No More Chicken, It’s Dog’s Year”.
Trust me. This flash animation is awesome! Check out here. Make sure your speaker is on.
