KLG - Kentucky Fried Chicken Clone?
Feb 1st, 2006 by Neo
I was in Tesco Hypermarket in Ipoh yesterday morning. At the back of the hypermarket, I bumped into KLG. The design of the shop and the signboard looked really familiar, just like our favorite fast food restaurant KFC - Kentucky Fried Chicken! The lettering is of the same font and the most color they use is red, similar red tone as KFC.
KLG stands for 卡啦雞 in Taiwan. In Chinese words the initials of 卡啦雞 turns out to be “KLG”. Anyway, some Malaysians prefer to name KLG as “Kuai Le Gee”, which means Happy Chicken.
I have heard so many people and fellow bloggers talked about it and thought would give it a try. Actually this new name is exceptionally famous in Ipoh.
This was my first time in a KLG restaurant. I was a little surprised to see the restaurant empty, with no other diners and their staffs were chating at the back of the counter.

The restaurant was empty. No other diners. Hmm… are they doing that bad here? Are they going to snatch some market shares from KFC?

The counter. With the menu at the top just like the other restaurants.
KLG do not offer so many choices compared to KFC. Apart from fried chicken (2 flavors, the normal type and the Thai style chicken wings), french fries and chicken burger; the rest are just soft drinks. Do they have coleslaw? I have only tried the original fried chicken and the french fries.

The fried chicken in a basket.
9 pieces of fried chicken with one regular sized soft drink (free). Costed RM19.99. The french fries and one soft drink costed RM2.49. Cheaper than KFC’s or not?
Anyway, I have the following personal opinion after my single one visit;
Chicken: tasted quite OK. Crispy and yummy.
French fries: not that good. tasted plain and hard.
Price: i think they are cheaper than KFC. Aren’t they?
Staffs: not very friendly, and was chating at the counter.
Have you tried KLG? What’s your verdict?!

they’re so going to get sued by kfc!
KLG.. yaya i saw alot in Ipoh.. dey’re like evrywhere but i had nver try it xD
Gong Xi! Gong Xi…
Wu Ching, they have a lot of branches in Malaysia for some time now. Is KFC suing them? Didn’t hear any news about that so far.
alicia, I think they started in Ipoh.
soohk, Gong Xi Gong Xi to you too
9 pieces for 20 bucks is dirt cheap! Definately cheaper than KFC where you pay 20 bucks for only 5 pieces, but jacky, I bet the taste would be really different…
too bad penang doesn’t have KLG
What does KLC stand for? Krappy Lousy Chicken?
Happy New Year to you!
It does look like KFC at a glance. Sadly, it’s clear that the people of KLG have decided to use this lookalike strategy.
But the good news is that at least you found the chicken to be quite good.
Interesting pics - thanks for sharing!
wohhhhh……………..
very the PIRATED, deep to the roots.
the name, the layout, the menu, the colour, the design, the food pics…. basically everything bare some similarities.
its time u write to KFCH, maybe u can earn some extra income
I don’t care…I’m hungry now. Gimme any chicken. Hahaha
Waaaah …running out of fresh ideas? Damn … even the colours are so KFC
I read about them 1 or 2 months ago from a chinese newspaper. (: Should give them some support, KFC is earning too much.
centerpide, yes, they taste very differently, but still quite good; and value for money.
Brennan, where can I find KLC?
Furkids, agree.
jellyfish, not sure if KFC is doing anything about it. Perhaps KFC is so confident in themselves and think KLG will not survive for long.
Che-Cheh, only the bones left, haha. Want or not?
louyau-mike, because KFC is the successful one, that may have prompted others to copy.
Yuenqi, if you want to try a different flavor of chicken, KLG is a good choice. Not for the french fries though. Also a good choice if you plan to treat a big group, because KLG is more value for money compared to KFC
yee? not kena sue yet? hahaha… really look a lot like KFC lor.
I am not sure whether it’s available in KL. Hmm..
The ketchup chicken wing is not nice at all…
When I look at their packings, I can see “made in taiwan” wordings.
Price is not competitive. I rather go for KFC.
penang already have KLG, state in farlim
THIS IS VERY GOOD AND VERY NICE LOR….
NOW HAVE MANY THING TO CHOISE
I VERY LIKE TO EAT THAI WENG…..
IT IS VERY DELICIOUS
nice, KFC vs KLG
anyway, KFC cannot sue them.
because the name is called KLG (Kuai Ler Gee).
And they are not using an old fat man to be thier logo, so it’s ok.
this case is just the same as “Panasonic” vs “Pensonic”.
and in the end they failed to sue Pensonic, because it’s not the same brand.
compared to kfc it does taste different,at least now they’ve got some competitors, which means they are room for improvement, not to mention they are not monopolising the market anymore which is good for consumers.
There’s one in taman desa in kl…..quite freindly staff they have there, the colesslaw and chickens is nice but sad to say the fries is not whats its expected
i`ve been to KLG at Manjung,4 times. ate the huge burger…damn satisfying. never tried the chickens though. but then again, the burger was chicken in it…haha
to anyone who keep complaining tat KLG shouldnt exist in malaysia…at least try it once in ur lifetime..it wont hurt, rite?
the fast food taste good and should give support from local as a new competitor for KFC to make improvement.
i have try the klg at taiping..
it is very tasty..
many set menu can find out at taiping..only at taiping town oh…
it is really really very tate and the bugger is really bigger than kfc…that kfc always give so small nia compare to klg..
so choose klg is better coz chicken is bigger, bugger is bigger, nugget n fren fries is more taste than kfc…
valeu for money only can find in klg….
satisfy..yeah!!
Could you please tell me how to start this kind business in abroad?

it is ipoh’s kfc… yeah
Hi all, as i read through, was funny though cuz i am doing an assignments of trade marks. this is like, the best example in malaysia… KLG, i never tried b4, cuz i am sick of fried chicken, but as u all said it was bigger and nicer, i think i shall try one day.
*cheers* =)
Should improve their services and train the staffs!!!
not bad la……..can give 2 star…can you make it new recipe????????
I work in the north, there’s a KLG outlet here.
I think KLG taste is very inconsistent. Sometimes too salty, sometimes very good. Seems like they just go to the supermarket and buy whichever cheapest fried chicken batter they can find.
The only thing consistent is that their mashed potatoes are really horrible.
Agreed, the place is really empty here, coz its quite expensive for a KFC a knockoff here in the north. I don’t think it’s cheap. Given the quality its only 1 or 2 ringgit less that KFC, which isn’t much. I was quite amazed that this is an “international” franchise from Taiwan.
Purely disgusting, i can’t believe that KLG is expanding a few more outlets across Malaysia. This proves that they are making profits, and it is quite hard for investors to comprehend that with such lousy concepts. Can’t stop laughing but envy in a way for their effort but utterly disgusted by their intelligence… it’s just shit…
