Penang aka Pulau Pinang Trip
Feb 10th, 2006 by Neo
On the 5th day of the Chinese New Year, my friends, my girl and I decided to drive to Penang for a one-day trip. Initially, my friends agreed to fetch us at 7:45am; now who would wake up so early during the festive new year? I woke up 7am, waited for them to turn up their faces until my neck also become longer. In the end, they finally turned up at 9am.
The drive to Penang was a breeze. Traffic was unexpectedly smooth, not much vehicles on the highway. Our first stop was Batu Feringgi.

This is a beach with miles and miles of clean white sand and clear blue sea. Quite clear lar
There were not much of activity at the beach front. We didn’t see anybody doing water sports such as skiing, yachting, swimming, and wind-surfing. There were anyhow some kuailos sun bathing, and some sailing, and horse riding.

Nice beach. Some boy and his girlfriend can’t wait to try the beach water.

Oh, they have horse riding too. But I think not many took the offer. RM20 per ride along the beach. Our group picture with the horse.

What’s this?
We all are not too familiar with the roads in Penang. Luckily a friend of us, Fei, came to our rescue, he brought us to Lorong Selamat, which is very famous for its char kuey teau. You have to queue up for 30 minutes for your order.
Let’s take a look at our lunch.

A variety of Penang’s Food. All very yummy.

This one is the best. Got sardin inside also?!

My friends enjoying the delicacies. Slurp slurp… haha. Soup was nice. Noodles was even nicer…
The weather in Penang was hot. After the hot lunch, we feel HOTTER. Sweat. Sweat. We decided to enjoy some air-con and thus we check out the Gurney Plaza.

My friend’s kid driving. Want to become a cab driver or a pilot when grow up?

A group photo at the walkways at the side of Gurney Plaza
A few drinks in a cafe at Gurney Plaza brought us to around 4:30pm. Of course we do not want to miss the opportunity to buy some of Penang’s local products at Chuan Peng Heang. Let’s take a look what they have inside the shop.

A variety of Tambun Biscuits, including the original flavour and the pandan flavour. Myself prefer the pandan one because of its nicer aroma.

Lots of other local products. Candies. Biscuits. Crackers…
Before long, our stomach were asking for attention. This time our travel guide friend brought us to the famous Restoran Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar Sdn Bhd. What a long name they have!

Restoran Kayu Nasi Kandar.
Quite a nice restoran. Not much patrons when we were there, most likely because it was still early for dinner… about 6pm I think. We ordered quite a lot of food here… my favorite was the fried chicken. Tasted yummy! Thanks fatt for the nice treat. And all the others for your treat. Next time on me, OK.

Our seats were beside the road. My friend Fatt was posing with his cute son
Too bad the pretty girls do not want their photos to be shown. That’s why can only show the handsome guys lor. Haha.
After the dinner, it was getting late… and we were very tired. What’s next? Head home loh… See you again, Penang. Thanks for the wonderful day!

Penang is the “heaven” of good, yummy & delicious food
U didn’t eat the famous Penang Chendul?
or the special ais kachang in Swatow Lane?
aiya all 3 men are in jeans lah. how can you said you are the one in jeans. i guess you are the one in white t-shirt, next to the sweet girl in orange blouse?
the char koay teow at lrg selamat is an overkill. RM4 cheapest and so small plate and goes as high as RM6. the seller also very arrogant and fierce. i don’t encourage my out-station friends to eat the char koay teow there.
as chen pointed out, you no try the famous penang cendul at penang road? should! then you can also try the laksa there, which to me is the best in penang. (not the air itam near kek lok si one).
for best tambun biscuits, should go to either him heang or ghee hiang.
Hey you went to Gurney Plaza? You didn’t go to the bakery shop at the ground floor, it is bread history. The only bread shop that give u the satisfaction on taste and a very reasonable piece. Hope u will came the next time. If you are from KL, you can go to Times Square/USJ or Taman Conaught.
Penang, hawker food now on this day very expensive already! RM3 - RM5 some more have to take double only can full. But 1 thing i miss very much is Penang Tambun Biscuit still the best, sorry to say not all the brand good. I have tried almost 20 different brand of Tambun biscuit, but 3 brands only can trust (Him Heang, Meng Heang and Hoh Heong).
