Batu Caves Tour and Pictures
Mar 19th, 2006 by Neo
Not too long ago I had a chance to visit Batu Caves, one of Malaysia’s most famous limestone hill to the North of the capital city Kuala Lumpur. Upon arrival, we were amazed at the amount of people peddling on the roadside leading to the caves. The afternoon sun was scorching hot and yet there were nothing to shade the peddlers from.

The peddlers under the hot sun trying to promote their goods.

Another look at the busy street. This one is selling clothes I guess.
Further down the street, we noticed more interesting things on sell.

Statues of Hindu Gods and Goddesses I suppose.

Food and drinks are of course not to be left out.

I guess these are Hindu’s traditional delicacies: Kalakand and Sone Papadi. Have any of you tried these food before?

Look at these hugh packets of muruku - one of my favorite junk food.
Further down the street, about 200 meters from the peddlers, we finally reached the hightlight of the day. What greeted us is simply amazing, a 42.7 meters tall Lord Murugan statue. This magnificent golden statue looks brand new as it was installed less than two months ago on 29 January, 2006.

The RM2.5 million statue has of course entered the Malaysian Book of Records as the tallest statue of a Hindu deity in the country. Lord Murugan, one of the divine powers in the Hindu pantheon of gods is worshipped by more than one million devotees around the world.
About 30,000 Hindu devotees and visitors came to witness the official unveiling of the countryĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s tallest Lord Murugan statue on Sunday and the garlanding of the golden statue yesterday.
Temple officials were now hoping to get the 42.7m statue, located at the Sri Subramaniar Temple at the foot of Batu Caves, into the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world.
Hundreds of balloons floated into the air and a shower of flowers fell from a hovering helicopter as Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu officially launched the opening ceremony about 6.15pm on Sunday.
As darkness fell, a spectacular 20-minute display of fireworks lit the RM2.5mil statue made of 1,550 cubic metres of concrete, 250 tonnes of steel bars and 300 litres of gold paint brought in from Thailand.
Fifteen Indian sculptors had worked on the project for three years.

Closer look at the magnificent statue standing tall in front of Batu Caves.
The steps at the back of the statue that lead up to the religious temple at the summit of the hill are of course not to be missed. However, mind you there are exhausting 272 steps altogether!

The start of the 272 steps climb!
Batu Caves consists of three main caves and several smaller ones. Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave is the best known and biggest one. The ceiling is 100 meters above ground and this huge chamber is lit by daylight from several holes in the ceiling. Temple Cave features a Shrine to Lord Subramania, a Hindu deity which is visited by many devotees throughout the year.
Since we were a bit scared of height and the sun was scorching hot, we didn’t take up the challenge
So, no photos from my camera for the actual Temple Cave. Next time maybe.

Nevertheless, there is a small temple at the foot of the hill. Not too sure what’s that called though.
Okay, till next time.

This article makes me move … and wanna go there and visit man… great article.
Hehe I think I’ve been to Batu Caves once only when I was little. Didn’t even climbed those steps back then.
never been to Batu Caves before although I stayed in KL for several years during my undergraduate days.
I have never tried those delicacies before but I presume those stuffs are very sweet?
om muruga,
its really good statue, i love om-muruga. i always believe him.
thanx
i also give my respect to them , i’am very proud to be malaysian citizen. i love my muruga..thanks..
hey, by all means look at the religious history here, but do not fail to see the large number of rare species that inhabit these caves and that are brushed aside by the malaysian government and hindu comunity so that they can make money. They are many species that are only found here, and would become extinct if these cave systems are exploited any more.
Terrific pics. We were there in April. My husband who had a quadrule bypass 5 years ago managed to climb all those steps and went right inside. All very beautiful and a memorable stop-over on our way to UK.
i love batu caves
I love Lord Murugan… the exclusive desgin of lord Murugan I like it…
I’ve been to Batu Caves twice, both during the construction phase of Lord Muruga’s statue. I am so pleased to see these new pics. they are beautiful and I can’t wait to go back again to see this in real.
Keep up your good work.

I’ve been to Batu Caves more then 50 times and the interesting fact is that there is a cave where somethings are wrong.
A few years back, some men went into the cave to do some research but they never returned. To find them, 3 private investigators went into the cave and never return. One day, the temple priests found blood coming out of the cave and the cave was closed using hard concreate. The reason is still unknown but officials said that they will find out the reason by 19 Jan 2007.
I will tell you the reason.
Lord Murugan will always be there for you when you need him , just call on him.
Snaps were great. First time I’m missing Thaipusam 2007 celebration in Batu Caves. Would really appreciate if someone would have taken snaps of ‘Thannir Panthal’ especially TNB’s. Beautiful cave like display with Lord Murugan in it and Ganapathy paired with elephant fountain decoration and non stop tasty juice supplies. Keep up the good job.
Its good to see the Statue completed. I visited the caves in 2005 and the statues were covered in scaffolding so I only managed to get a peek.
I note that you did not mention how difficult it is to reach the caves…all those steps…….it nearly killed me.
But once you reach the entrance of the caves, its well worth the climb.
