Zinédine Zidane vs Marco Materazzi
Jul 10th, 2006 by Neo
Nothing much to write today. Since the just concluded Fifa World Cup 2006 is such a hot topic today, I guess I will try to write something on this subject… A quick check on the major sports news sites revealed that Italy has won the World Cup. OK, doesn’t mean so much to me as I am a dummie when it comes to football.

Then, I came across this interesting clip where the France captain, Zinédine Zidane lost control of his temper and sent Marco Materazzi of Italy sprawling with a head butt that led to his ejection during extra time.
The head butt to the center of Materazzi’s chest was clearly intentional, and referee Horacio Elizondo of Argentina showed Zidane the 28th red card of the tournament, a World Cup record. With that Zidane was sent out of the match.
What a disgrace for the team!
Anyway, I dare not comment too much on this as I have not been following much on the World Cup. I better stay with my badminton
Check out this video clip too…

cool! head butt!
I was actually cheering for Zidane when he head butted Materazzi. Damn cool!
….anyway he shouldn’t have done that la.
it was reported that materazzi provoked him. well even if provoked, he should have kept his cool and not did what he did but i guess the pressure was on him, that’s why he lost his cool and turned into a bull.
hmm… tit tou gong!!
anyway, i also feel that people who cannot control his temper during competition is very very stupid. just like how Wayne Rooney did. haiz..
Anyway, perhaps he was trying to head butt the ball, but missed and hit into Materazzi’s chest?
Sakuragi Hanamichi has come into play already…
i think it’s time that players react exactly the way zidane did to dirty insults. let’s not be fooled by materazzi - he knew what he was saying and why…and you bet it was pretty awful. i would like to see any of you suggesting to keep cool when someone badmouths you (who knows how many times during the game); you can bet we will soon find out what he said. at least it will bring (FINALLY) the attention of FIFA to these jerks who use such low behaviour to score cheap points on those who are sensitive to such comments. maybe not all react the way zidane did - but i say GOOD FOR YOU, ZIZOU, even if it may have lost France the cup. (and those of you who do not approve - i suggest you never watch hockey again!)
funny thing…everybody applauds when harry potter decides to hit malfoy for taunting him about his family or whatever…what’s different in zidane vs. materazzi?? taunting players during the game with dirty comments should be stopped right now! maybe this incident will bring attention to this!!
Zidane is the best soccer player and Materazzi is just a low life fucker.
I guess all the muslims have it in thier blood for voilence. I really wish Italians kicked zidane’s ass royally for what he did there. may be cut off his head so, that he won’t head butt anyone in future. I pity all you fools who enjoy this kinda violence in sports or any other matter. shame on you. These kind of players should be filtered out and save life of others. *peace*
Wow, this Vel is an idiot, a hypocrite, and a racist. First it’s stereotyping all muslims, then promoting ass-kicking and head-cutting, then pitying and shaming people for enjoying violence in sport, then wishing people peace and asking lives to be saved.
First of all everyone knows that Zidane is a great player even Materazzi. I think that Zidane reacted very dirty, even tough if Materazzi said something to him. Zidane showed disrespect to his team mates and especially to his country. Its a shame, because he made a lot of trouble to his team because they came with 10 men. Now days Players try to nervous other players so they react bad, and will be sent off. I think thats what happened between Zidane & Materazzi. Dominic Wagner said that Materazzi is the dirtiest defender, but everyone knows that when Dominic used to play football he was dirty too….!!!!
I just wanted to add to this thread that ALL italian players are a bunch of faggots that can’t play soccer so instead they just insult, cry and create fouls where there are none. The only thing that was wrong about Zidane’s behavior is that he should’ve kick that motherfucker while he was in the ground until his head explodes or something like that. Anyway, even Italian shits KNOW that france played WAY BETTER than Italy. And that no one will ever remember Italy’s triumph cause it meant nothing due to the fact that it is KNOWN that Italians use the slimest, lowest tricks in the bag to achieve victory. Zidane was, is and WILL FOREVER BE a master of soccer while Materazzi and company are just a bunch of noobs trying to win by any means… You know that, even if you where in favor of Italy. Ah, and BTW, just in case you think I’m some sort or Italian hater, my grandmother is Italian.
Vel, you talk like a bloody fool. Materazzi has to be punished for his foul mouth. And zidane has done the right thing. Vel like people are creating all the violence in the world. Vel should be hanged in front of public. It was a pitty that the fifa has no rule to punish the players who are provokating violence. The italians knows that if zidane was in the ground they will definitely be defeted. thats why materazzi did it. Shame on you materazzi, though your country has own the cup. but the people of the world knows that you dont deserve it.
Zidane should have been scoring a goal as a response. That would have been the most dignified way to do it. Then, he could have sorted Materazzi out after the game. Just the two of them, no referee involved.
Wow, most of you people are incredibly thick-skulled. I don’t know who the hell this vel person is, but you should really watch your mouth.
Just for the record, when I saw that head-butt I did not cheer. But I didnt bow my head either… I knew that Zidane must have a legitimate reason for his action… after all, when then did he walk away, but only then to turn around after reconsideration and head-butt materazzi. Zidane is incredibly intelligent, we see that in the way he plays soccer. He knew what would happen, but if he never did it, cheap players and teams like that will always be the bully. If he wanted to actually hurt Materazzi, he would have punched him in the face. Rather, he was making a statement. Now, its one of the most discussed issues in the world and Zidane is actually making a publing address on the incident tonight.
Anyways, the french president had him over for dinner after the game, and just yesterday the ALgerian president sent him a letter saying he fully supports him. And so do I just like a continually growing number of people. For as Thierry Henry said “you can take the man out of the ruff neighbourhood, but you can’t take the rough neighbourhood out of him”. And in cases like this, why should you?
Zidane was interviewed and confirmed what the expert lip readers have published a couple of days ago. After twice saying that Zidane’s sister was a whore, he said “everyone knows your mother is a terrorist whore”. Zidane didn’t repeat the sentence, he is too proud for that, he just agreed to the question the french journalist Michel Denisot asked him.
As much as I agree that this headbutt is inacceptable on a soccer field, you can’t say that to anyone. You would say that to someone in the street, you’d end up in the hospital or in justice with a fine. Materazzi should be excluded of soccer for life unless he finally officially admits what he said, especially after all these FIFA campaigns against racism. There are a lot of insults you may say on the fields… but not this one.
Have you noticed how Materazzi didn’t even try to avoid Zidane: he walked straight towards him, he wanted to be pushed, was ready to jump on the ground to get Zidane out. The only thing he didn’t expect is that Zidane is a man, he is a proud man with honour, and even if this was the last game of his career, even if this was the final of the world cup, he would not let his mother and sister be insulted by a cretin.
Zidane, you said sorry for your act, sorry towards the children, the educators…. but not sorry to Mazeratti because you don’t regret your action. I respect you infinitely for that.
Blatter&FIFA, you did your job right, you excluded Zidane. Now do the right thing: don’t allow Materazzi to play any international game and put the international shame on him.
… I can’t believe this animal said “I didn’t call him a terrorist, I don’t even know what this word means”….
I think Zidane has the right to kick Materazzi’s ass, because he has a bad history in talking shyt to players, and who gives a damn about who is gana win if some 1 is gana come and talk shyt to you in the middile of the game!! I’m proud of what Zidane did !!!
…so dont mess with zidane !
[...] You can also see that my previous post on the headbutt is quite popular too, with comments coming from as far as France and Italy - by their supporters I guess. [...]
Vel are you an idiot? U say that all muslims like violence and you write ” really wish Italians kicked zidane’s ass royally for what he did there. may be cut off his head ” then what does that make you ? You hypocrite ! If someone would insuld your mother and your sister..you would walk away ? That just shows one thing that you have no self respect or dignity…
Ok. At last under pressure, and surely for the best, FIFA are conducting a thorough enquiry into what exactly happened confronting both player on the 20th of July.
Replaying the match is kind of useless now though. But for the best, and to have great World Cups again in the future, FIFA *knows* it must better it’s refereeing and also prevent Italian style soccer to take over the game on an international level if it wants to keep it a family program (think of sponsors). Just as an example, only in Italy have players (yes not supporters but players) *not* been expelled for doing the fascist salute after a goal. I honestly think Italy is not to be condemned as a whole and this sorry period comes from the Berlusconi era. After all aren’t all these players on the field coming from Italy, involved in a judicial case back home about EPO and match-fixing ?
As for Zidane, well… Probably the referee ought to have whistled at Materazzi well before in order for Zidane to not feel all alone on the field defending himself. In the Youtube video above, look at what he is doing compared to what he said “I just grabbed his shirt a bit” - in fact he titty tweaked Zidane, then holds him back as a basketball player bloquing (illegal in football) while the ball is already on the other side of the field. That alone is worth at least a yellow card. And stuff like this happened to Zidane for a full 2 hours (ok 110′). What can one say, all has been said already, except I ain’t gonna watch World Cup 2010 if FIFA is not going to apply their own rulebook. If I want dirt, I tune into Georgian SAT tv to see Ultimate Fighting. If people revere Pele Maradonna and Ronaldo, it is because on the contrary they only played the ball, not the player with the ball, it’s precision, not bullying the audience wants. I think of Thuram, hes a mean mofo, but he *never* hits anything *but* the ball, period : it STAYS soccer the.
OK first off, I think how Zidane acted with the headbutt was kinda unreasonable, but then again, if a dirty ass italian grabbed your jersey and said he’d rather have the jersey off Zidane’s wife instead, I not only would have headbutt the dirty fella and finish him off while he was on the ground.
I mean we all knew he was gonna get a red card but I think he should have beat the hell out of him!!! That was a shameful way of losing the game, but the reason behind it had constitues what he did.
Just in case you all dont know what happened, Materazzi grabbed his jersey and wouldn’t let go and Zidane and him talked back and forth and Zidane said if you want the Jersey, you can have it and Materazzi replied with “I’d rather have it off your woman”. After almost 2 hours of soccer and running around the defense, there will be frustration boiling in a player and i think that’s what happend. Materazzi wanted to tick off Zidane to make him react in the way he did. That’s dirty and they don’t deserve no world cup, but then again the refereeing in the World Cup has been horendous!!!! They both should have been ejected!!!!
Zidane we’re all with you man and God bless you and your family!!!! Great job man, just wish you could have ended it on.
Ok BTW, I’m sure none of you know that this type of trash talk goes around on the field about 100 times a game. Just because Zidane can’t control his actions doesn’t mean everyone else can’t. Anyone who is in the 110th minute of a World Cup Finals game, tied 1-1 and is playing his last ever soccer game and can’t control himself, has something wrong with him. Also, this is not Zidane’s first incident. Throughout his career, he has received 15 red cards. A player with class shouldn’t have that many red cards.
I heard he got 12, but doesn’t matter
15 red cards in his career, knowing he started as a professional in ~1991 (first game with the national team in 1994 against tcheck republic), that’s 1 red card per year. It is true it is over average
It is true, Zidane has had bad acts, but so does a player who plays the biggest role in a game. If you are the one who touches the most balls in a game, you are going to be the one who will be fouled the most, who will be the most likely to make errors too.
Well, as FIFA did, it is time to get over that story. He did a bad act, there is a reason why he headbutted Mazeratti, but still he shouldn’t have. There is one person in the world who suffers of that, that’s him. A respect for the talented player he was, I hope the memory he’ll leave to the next generation will be he’s dribbles, goals and wins, not his headbutt.
Merci Zizou
It was the most accurate and beautiful head butt I have ever seen. He should have killed that son of a bitch. viva la France. I love you Zizou and that bald head of yours. No one can handle Henry. Anyone that thinks otherwise, please I would like to hear your comments.
Zidane is an absolute legend
I love him
He is the best
Materazzi deserved it and the refs are idiot
Who cares he should have bent the rules a bit seeing how Zidane is one of the best players, his last game, Materazzi provoked his ill mother
I would have given Materazzi a red and Zidane a warning or yellow maximum!
Way to go Zizou, we all love you dw bout dat poof Marco
In memory of Zinedine Zidane ‘zizou’s football career!
i think he did the right hing. if anyone says anything to my sister or my any family member to disgrace him or her, i would do the same or may more than that, may hit him on his nose. way to go zidane. he wasn’t just a great player, he is a great person. no brother can keep himself calm when someone said that your sis is a whore and i would love to fuck her even someone’s sis is really a whore. so i give him a bow to do that. i wish he could break his chest.
