Dogathon 2006
Aug 16th, 2006 by Neo
Hidden treasure, shipwrecks and battles at sea… when the word “pirate” comes to mind, you might imagine a man with scars, an eye patch and a wooden leg but have you ever met a bunch of four legged pirates?
Haha… funny introduction to the Dogathon 2006 which was organised by the Veterinary students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Putra Malaysia (UPM). This year the theme was “Pirates”, probably they watched too much Pirates of the Caribbean. Anyway, the programmes started as early as 7:30am, but we only reached Bukit Ekspo where the event was held at about 8:30am.
This is consider an early outing on a Sunday morning. Since we wanted to reach there early we even had our breakfast in the car - simple bread and packet drinks

Haha, a pirates ship in conjunction with this year’s theme!
At 8:30am, many dog owners and animal enthusiasts had already gathered at the venue. I believe I will remember this day for a long time because this is the day when I saw the most dogs in my entire life! All breeds, sizes, and colors of dogs!

Dalmatian, or rather Dalmatian look-alike. She looks kind of sleepy or shy?

More Dalmations

American Black & Tan Coonhound

Big dogs

Small dog. Very cute

More small dogs… so many!! One whole family huh?

True to the spirits of the pirates!

The dogs were having a good time because they get to mingle and meet new friends
I was having a good time too because I get to see so many different kinds of dogs… and some nice chics too
Not sure if I met Che-Cheh and her Chester there or not, because can’t recognise them.
Anyway, the organiser prepared many programmes for the day, including Fastest Eating Duo where dog and owner work as a team to eat their food in record time, Musical Chairs, Dogathon Idol (a combination of Best-Trick and Dogathon Pageant), and Treasure Chest to match the pirate theme.
There were some agility contests too in the agility area. Agility trainers from Pet-n-You also showed us some very good demonstrations which I will show you some other time… stay tuned, a video clip will be included, I am sure you will be amazed to see the smart dogs performing!

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? *WOOF.. WOOF.. WOOF WOOF*
Hi Neo,
I went to this event too. It was my first time to a dog event. Didn’t know I would enjoy it so much that I blogged about it.
Frankly speaking, I left the place with a warm and fuzzy feeling and a huge urge to squeeze anything furry and cuddly in my path :p - aiyoh! very ‘geram’ lor. they are all so cute!
P/S: I’ve visited Che-cheh’s site too. Her Chester is exactly the type of dog I would loved to own in the future
Very very very very cute puppies and dogs indeed.
Hey where’s the youtube ?
You can’t recognize me and Chester ? Knock your head! hehehe
I already show a few picts of me and Chester in my blog leh.
Kleio, I used to have the same dream like you…retriever really can melt us hor.
I decided to get a retriever myself nearly 3 years ago and as you know I named him Chester. I’ve never been so happy in my life.
Che-Cheh,
The video is coming. Very soon… Stay tuned.
[...] I enjoyed a lot of programmes at Dogathon 2006 which was held in Bukit Ekspo, UPM last weekend. One of the best programme apart from seeing and caressing the dogs, would have been witnessing the agility contest and demonstration by Pet-n-You, well known for agility and obedience dog training. Hey there…noticed you asked what is the cheapest DSLR. Actually it all depends on the condition you want it. Second-hand or worse can probably be quite cheap. However, if want to buy brand new, it depends what kind of user you are, whether you are a Canon/Nikon/Olympus/Pentax/Sony person. There is no fixed cheapest actually for DSLRs. It’s quite different compared to consumer P&S cameras. Body only, the cheapest would be Canon 350D (price dropping), Nikon D50 (price dropping). There really is no standard cheapest as the lens you may want will vary. Canon lenses are cheaper but Nikon lenses are better, for a price of course. It also depends whether you want to buy a few lenses (which you should) and a flash (desperately needed). After all that, I don’t even own a DSLR. I’m still waiting for the price drops to hit. Maybe in November the price for entry-level DSLRs will face a steep drop. Bad body+Good lens=Good picture. Good body+Bad lens=Not that great picture.
Cheers
Pinkfrog,
Thanks a lot for the tips. Yes, I heard that Canon 350D and Nikon D50 are very good entry level dSLR cameras.
However, I am not sure if it’s time for me to upgrade because the price is still very expensive for me, and I am still very much a point and shoot guy, so don’t know how I can benefit from a dSLR… may not know how to operate it afterwards
Any suggestions? Perhaps I am more suited to a good point and shoot digital camera?
Currently I own Sony Cybershot DSCP10, and Canon Powershot S3 IS.
I would suggest if you want to shoot seriously, to wait as many new cameras are coming out at the end of the year. The price will definately drop. D80 is launching in Malaysia most likely around September and a replacement is highly anticipated for 350D.
Cheers.
[...] Does this big dog look familiar to you? Haha… he was the one we saw in the UPM Dogathon! What a small world, so lucky to meet this dog again, and as though the dog recognised me he woof woof-ed at me. Haha [...]
the dog on the first picture is a great dane not a dalmatian.
That first dog is a Great Dane (the color is called Harlequin). The third picture is a black Great Dane and the fourth are 2 Saint Bernards and all the little dogs are Shih Tzu’s.
Do you really think that first dog is a Dalmation?? It’s a great dane! And the third is not a black and tan coonhound. It doesn’t even have tan on him, nor does it even look like a coonhound.
That Dalmatian look-a-like is a mismarked or heavily marked harlequin Great Dane. So many people call mine a Dalmatian. So my Dane has a shirt that says “I’m not an F’n Dalamation!” lol Sure would be one huge and ugly Dalmatian..
