Who the hell is Mawi? Okay, I admit I have not been following local entertainment news these days. Recently, I came across a few blogs talking about this dude by the name of Mawi. Last week, Astro and RTM were even airing programmes about this dude and his ex-fiancĂ©e, Nordiana Mohd Naim, or Ina, hoping to attract some viewers from TV3 who was live telecasting the wedding reception of Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk K. Now, this dude must be very interesting…

Quickly I fired up Google and did some research. Before long, I realised that Mawi or Asmawi bin Ani is the male of Malaysian pop princess, Siti Nurhaliza. Mawi is as popular as Siti herself, and any other artist and celebrity in Malaysia. He’s probably more popular than the legendary P. Ramli.
Mawi is also the winner of Akademi Fantasia 3 (AF3) in Malaysia. He came to Akademi Fantasia in 2005 as a raw talent who found it awkward to even take a few dance steps. Within three months, however, he became the nation’s hottest celebrity. After winning Akademi Fantasia by a landslide, he became such a nation-wide phenomenon in Malaysia.
His almost overnight rise to fame has often been compared to another famous Malaysian singer and icon, Siti Nurhaliza. However, his critics predict that Mawi will end up just being a “one hit wonder”, following the career trends of all other previous winners of Akademi Fantasia. He is also currently the face of the noodle company, Mamee.
