Taman Connaught Pasar Malam
Dec 10th, 2006 by Neo
Folks, do you usually frequent pasar malams (night markets) in your neighborhood? I myself used to love to have weekly evening walk at night markets, just killing my time walking and browsing through all the various weird items the stall owners sell, or sometimes I may stop to have some light snacks if my finance allows. But too bad, nowadays I think the place where I stay, Puchong, has got no such places, or at least not that I am aware of. If you know there is a night market in Puchong, please do let me know!
Anyway, a friend of mine invited me to this super big night market in Taman Connaught earlier this week. This night market in Cheras which opens every Wednesday is possibly the biggest and longest night market in Klang Valley. How can I resist such an opportunity to visit such a grand night market?! Off we went!!

Super pasar malam. This photo was taken on the pedestrian bridge as my car was parked across the road.
Reached there not too late, about 7:30pm, and the crowd was amazing! People mountain people sea (translate that to Cantonese). I took a lot of photos for the sake of showing you the biggest and longest pasar malam in Klang Valley
Given the size of this pasar malam, certainly there were a lot of variety. Almost everything you can think of can be found here. There were the usual stalls selling clothes, shoes, CDs, DVDs, toys and girl’s accessories. I took some time to browse through the DVDs, they have quite a large collection as all the recent movies can be found there. I didn’t enquire about the price though as I don’t buy pirated stuff - I supply them

Blur pic because I have to snap in a split second. Those taiko don’t want their pics taken!
The food stalls are a must at any night markets. Let’s check out some of them.

Crab biscuits.
I had my starter from this stall. The crab biscuits were quite nice and each one of them comes with a large crab on it. Costs RM1.50 a piece though. A bit on the pricey side.

Taiwan pizza at RM0.60 a piece.

Variety of mouth watering cakes and biscuits. Smells good too.

Drinks originated from Taiwan.
This drink is quite common nowadays. There are so many flavors which you can choose and mix yourself. You can mix peach, lavender, milo, chocolate, green apple, strawberry, blueberry, etc etc… but the final drink is drinkable or not is another story, don’t blame me.
Haha.
Now, let me tell you the talk of the town! Taman Connaught Pasar Malam is well known not only for its longest pasar malam, it’s also well known for its super stinky tofu! In Cantonese, it’s called the Chou Taufu. I am sure you came across this before in Hong Kong television serials.

Chiew Chiew Chou Taufu.
It’s not hard to find this particular stall as all you need to do is follow the stink which you can smell miles away! I can’t believe it when I saw the long queue waiting for their stinky tofu, it’s very long…. at least 50 people there! Those people certainly do not mind the smell and love the food! For me, it’s bloody stinky! I couldn’t really stand it! It’s hot and arhhhh…

Preparing the Chou Taufu.
Needless to say, I didn’t try the tofu!
If in the unlikely case you love stinky and rotten food and have no opportunity to go to Hong Kong, then you can have your weekly supply now at Chiew Chiew Chou Taufu, Taman Connaught. Opens every Wednesday.

The stall owner preparing the Mua Chi for me.
After checking out the talk of the town, I went further to seek some more food. I had some fried chicken, fish balls, a pack of ‘Mua Chi’ and a cup of good old ‘Shaking Ice Cream’ as appetizer.
Burrpp… excuse me… I have had enough… how about you?

it actually takes abt 2 hours or more just walking 1 end to the other end. just walking means not stoping to look at anything. unless you are there early before the crowd kicks in. if you actually jalan-jalan and makan-makan with the heavy crowd, @ 4 hours !
how did the stinky tofu smell like?
wuching: smells like longkang I heard. LOL.
u arrived there at 7.30pm is a bit early..the stalls will only start to pack things at least at 12.30am..
the tofu does really smells like clogged drain or unclean dumpsite..but if u are standing FEW steps from the stall, it’s not stinky at all..
and by the way, most of the stall operators are the same person from other pasar malam site in Cheras area..i wonder why the one in Connaught is the biggest and longest one..

Ducky,
You are right, we spent almost 3 hours there with occasional stops at some of the stalls.
Wuching,
Smells like dirty longkang!
Yatz,
Few steps from the stall, it’s not stinky at all… I don’t think so, unless the wind is blowing to the opposite direction.
