No Teh Tarik for Malaysian Astronauts
Dec 18th, 2006 by Neo
I strongly welcome and support the idea of sending Malaysian astronauts into space on board a Russian rocket scheduled 2 September 2007. When I heard the news, I was wondering what on earth could possibly a Malaysian astronaut do up there in the space… then someone came up with a brilliant idea. Let Malaysia’s first astronaut do what no one in space has done before, that’s to play batu seremban, spinning tops and making teh tarik while in space. It was reported that that is not a joke!

Teh tarik, a type of tea which is very common in Malaysia and Singapore.
OMG, what a brilliant idea for the Malaysian government to spend so much money to send an astronaut using the Russian rocket into space to play Malay children’s games!
I would not have believed the story if it was not reported in Thestar!
This become a funny joke until Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis clarified the matter today.
There will be no teh tarik-making or roti canai-tossing experiments in space for our Angkasawan when he blasts off in October.
Instead, he will carry out at least 10 laboratory tests for serious research designed by 10 universities, institutes of higher education and government science agencies.
Also, he revealed that the Angkasawan (astronauts) programme is part of Malaysia’s purchase of the Sukhoi multi-role fighter aircraft from the Russians in 2000. Thus, unlike other countries that have to pay the Russians to send their astronauts to space, the entire programme for Malaysia is borne by the Russians. But I believe the fighter aircrafts would be much more expensive for us so the Russians can cover the costs?! No free lunch in this world OK.
Right now, we have 2 selected astronauts wannabe namely, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Kapten Dr Faiz Khaleed. They are undergoing training for a year in Russia before departing for the International Space Station.
Haha, what a relief! Hopefully, the world will not laugh at Malaysia’s Angkasawan programme as the teh tarik programme anymore!
