Sibu Central Market tour
May 2nd, 2007 by Neo
In case you haven’t seen the Sibu Central Market before, here I have tonnes of photos for your eyes and I bet they are as good as you visit Sibu yourself. But before that, let’s have a quick tour around the market first.

The Sibu Central Market is located at Channel Road, one of the busiest road in this town. Does Sibu town look clean and organised to you?
Of course cleaner and more organised as all hawkers previously located along the riverfront, side and back lanes are resettled in the new market.

You can see Wisma Sanyan, the tallest structure in Sibu and in fact the whole of Sarawak from anywhere. In the foreground are rows of old shop houses, so much contrast with the new skyscraper at the back!

That’s Sibu’s seven-storey Tua Pek Kong pagoda sticking out from among the old shop houses. If I didn’t tell, you won’t know that the Tua Pek Kong temple in Sibu is older than you and me (people say it’s more than 100 years old). The rear portion of the temple was demolished in 1987 and replaced by the pagoda dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. If you have a chance, make sure you climb up the pagoda to enjoy a relaxing and spectacular view of the Rejang River with its passing vessels, barges, express passenger boats and rickety sampans.
OK, hope you enjoyed the quick tour, now’s let get naughty at the Central Market!

A big sign welcomes you! Come, let’s explore this central market which was completed at the end of 1996 at a cost of RM12 millions!

Looks pretty big, with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of vegetables, fruits and groceries. Just a rough guess, I think maybe there are not less than 500 stalls.

Can you recognise the Buah Dabai? Looking a lot like the olive, some say even tastes similar, Buah Dabai is one of the best sellers in Sibu!

Sibu pineapples are big, juicy and sweet! Simply yummylicious!

All sorts of eggs, different grades different pricing. I don’t usually buy them so no idea if they are cheap or expensive.

Live chickens are wrapped up tube-like in newspaper and neatly displayed in rows. Interested customers just pick their preferred chicken and carry it home like a handbag. How ingenious is the packaging!

Tiger prawns!

Hairy rambutan.

Make sure you check out the second level where the eateries and cafes are located. There are shops selling clothes at very affordable prices too. Make sure you visit them, who knows you might be able to find some sexy dresses there!

Anston,
You come visit Sibu then you know lor… or you read my blog more often see got Sibu lenglui or not.
Clement,
Where’s your family shop? What does it sell?
The live chicken wrapped in newspaper is indeed something unique. But from the viewpoint of an Animal Science student, it looks a lil’ tad cruel. Maybe this has got to do with the animal welfare presentation I did a couple of weeks ago, haha.
i’ll post about it sometime soon…. but not mentioning it’s mine.. till my blog traffic decrease a little.. amazing enough, not much clicks come from the lady that cursed me.. was wondering, does all her reader comes from search machine, or all of them religiously follow her blog… (my normal posts still goes on in my wordpress blog.. http://clementwpy.wordpress.com/)
oh…my, feel sad for the chickens!
The place is so clean that it does not seem like a market. The rambutan looks delicious.
