World Badminton Championships 2007 final
Aug 21st, 2007 by Neo
It’s time to benchmark yourself against the best players in the world again. I am talking about the World Badminton Championships which was held at Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil last week. Too bad, Malaysia only managed to bring back one Bronze medal, which was contributed from the veteran pair of Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah. It was a really disappointing outing for the Malaysian squad. After all the hype we were made to believe it was the Malaysian squad’s best preparation and hopes were high on winning a title in the championships for the first time in 30 years! We failed miserably yet another time! Lee Chong Wei, don’t blame on others, instead show us some good results please.
Okay, before someone say I have talked too much, let’s proceed to check out the event.

That was what greeted us. The Finger Lickin’ Good! KFC. We had enough of KFC just the night before, so no KFC for at least a week.
The first match was the Mixed Doubles between Indonesia (Nova Widianto and Lilyana Natsir) and China (Zheng Bo and Gao Ling). I believe it started at 2pm sharp. I didn’t know Malaysians are so punctual? We were a little late, by the time we settled down, the Indonesians had already enjoyed a comfortable lead in the first game.

I couldn’t believe what I saw, the Chinese were struggling to get back into their game. Gao Ling didn’t look like the usual herself, she looked troubled. Her net touches were not effective and threatening to the opponents. Zheng Bo didn’t look very promising either, his smashes were not sharp and powerful. They looked totally different today!

The Indonesian supporters were obviously overjoyed with their countryman’s performance. Cheerings and clappings were loud and deafening. Before long, the Indonesian pair celebrated victory with this gigantic Indonesian flag! Yes, in our country… how tulan was that?!

The second match was between Zhu Lin (China) and Wang Chen (Hong Kong). What, a Chinese in the final again? Yes, not surprisingly but just in case you didn’t know, the two big guns in the Chinese women’s singles camp were shown the exit in the early rounds this year. They were Zhang Ning and Xie Xing Fang. Shocking exits for them! And what’s glad for us was that Xie Xing Fang actually lost to Wong Mew Choo!

The third match was the match of the day! It was Men’s Singles between Lin Dan and Sony Dwi Kuncoro which need no more introduction. Lin Dan showed supremacy over the Indonesian but the young Indonesian showed no fear and putted up a good fight. Lin Dan managed to get into the games quickly and even showed some killing back hand smashes. The match was really exciting and ended with Lin Dan winning 21-11, 22-20. What a great match, especially the 2nd game!
Now, I need to rethink if I should play against Lin Dan. He looked like he was in his top form, unless I prepared well I might not win him.

I hope you remember how much I bought the tickets. They costed me RM103 per ticket and all I got was this small and cramped seat which was quite far from the courts. The players couldn’t even see my nose! And worse was this uncle in front of me who showed off his big ass DSLR which blocked my views. Uncle, I know your DSLR camera is sophisticated, but pay respect to my tiny compact camera lar.

The wasn’t anything surprising from the next match which was between two prominent Chinese pairs. These two pairs appeared in the finals in numerous other championships and it’s only a matter of luck and form which decide who will win.

The final match of the day was a good one. A much awaited match between two of the strongest badminton countries in the world Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia) versus Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae (Korea). Eventually the match favored the more experienced Indonesia with them winning 21-19, 21-19. What a closely contested match. But I am sure the Korean will come back strong in Beijing Olympic next year… goodness me, Lee Yong Dae is only 19 years old now.

Apart from the great matches on court, there were other goodies off court too. There were some pretty good looking chicks among the crowd, such as this one who screamed on the top of her voice whenever the players did any killing smashes. Although they appear to be a little distracting, but I didn’t mind at all… in fact they made the stadium a much better place to stay for the afternoon.

Zewt,
Yes, they were screaming widely! I think this one supported the Chinese players… but she cheered when any of them did any good shots.
U asked the HP no from that chick onot?
MonkeyWong,
No wor. Too busy watching the matches.
Wow, i bet the stadium was crowded lor! China chicks was everywhere? hehe…
Feel sad after Malaysia team lose, they need more more training! (i guess)
Surprisingly, the stadium was not that crowded. I estimate only 50% occupied. Now you know why sponsorship for badminton is so low compared to sports such as tennis.
You see Wimbledon, whole stadium jam packed.
I am all for screaming chicks. She is the only one?
Neo, dun lie lah. If you are too busy watching the matches, then how come can still take a shot on that hot chick! I feel hot now!
Hey already emailed you my full name and ic number! Tell me when it’s confirmed that i can collect my ticket ya and how I should collect it!

Simple American,
Me too. There were a few good looking ones. They all made the matches more interesting!
Jam,
One shot. Took me a few seconds only.
Nastasshea,
Great! Will email you soon.
[...] Hi folks, please guess how many shuttle cocks are there in this Proton Persona and you might win this brand new car and drive it home! Proton took the World Badminton opportunity and had this new car on display. Not only that, they came up this lame shuttle cock guessing game to get you to participate so that they can collect your contact details and send you lots of rubbish in the future. [...]
