Deep fried bread stick

This local delicacy has many names, it’s well known by the name “yau ja gwai” by the Cantonese speaking communities and the Hokkien people call it “u char kway”. But who doesn’t know it’s also referred to as the youtiao, or literally “oil strip”? So many names, but they all mean the same thing, the “oil-fried devil”.

I haven’t had this devil for a long time and by chance I was at this famous road side food court in Puchong Jaya (beside Tesco) which serves lots of hawker food. You can have a variety of wonderful dishes here… so many varieties until you can’t even remember what your surname is! Haha… the aroma from the “yau ja gwai” was felt from far away and it made my taste buds water. I had to buy a pack to try it!

I was a little shocked to learn that the price has jumped again! This time, it costs RM0.60 a piece! Wow… years ago it costed only RM0.20 in my hometown and every family member could have a stick of his own with only RM1! Haha… of course that was many years ago. But I still feel RM0.60 a piece is too pricey. However, since I had not had this devil for years, I bought 4 pieces for my supper!

That’s the place where I bought my pricey deep fried oily bread, the “dai ma” food court where it’s jam packed with patrons especially in the weekend evenings. You can see the food court operators still trade outside at the road side. How come not afraid of the MPSJ ah? Got urut traditional (traditional massage) above, not sure got hanky panky there hor?
What’s the devil’s pricing in your area? Are they good?
