Bandar Bukit Puchong lantern fiesta
Sep 23rd, 2007 by Neo
Last evening was a busy evening for Puchong folks because there was a happening Lantern Fiesta held at Bandar Bukit Puchong in conjunction with the lantern festival. It was at the recreation park immediately opposite of the township’s developer office, Bukit Hitam Development Sdn Bhd. This fiesta started at about 6pm but I only managed to arrive at 7:45pm. A hugh crowd greeted me and many more were busy lining up for the free dinner the organizer had prepared.

Who could refuse to line up for free buffet food as good as these although the line was like half a KM long?
I was simply impressed with the varieties of the food served. There were fried chicken, curry chicken, nuggets, fried rice, fried rice vermicelli, watermelon slices, orange slices… and many more. Some of the trays were already empty… But worry not as the caterer had endless supplies and the trays were re-filled soon afterwards.
I didn’t queue up for the food, instead the pomelo eating contest on the stage caught my attention.

Volunteers were asked to eat a small pomelo as quickly as possible. The pair who finished gulping up the pomelo in the shortest amount of time would become the winner. Surprisingly… the pair who raised their hand first announcing victory was this uncle and her auntie partner!

The couple won a handsome hamper for their great effort in finishing the big pomelo. Put your hands together for them! They managed to beat all the other contestants who were clearly much younger and strongly built! I saw the uncle eating the pomelo earlier, he was quite steady… which was different from how the youngsters ate. Perhaps the old folks have lots of experience in eating pomelo! Haha…

Another attention grabbing display was this pile of mooncakes… oh wait, it’s not a display. If you could guess correctly how many mooncakes were there, you won yourself prizes. How many do you think were there? My guess was 550! But I left before they announced the winning number so I have no way to know the correct answer. (Hope the first prize was not this hugh pile of mooncakes… how could you finish them ah? Haha)

Awesome hampers. You want one of these? You have to win either the pomelo eating contest, or guess correctly the number of mooncakes, or perhaps make yourself a winning lantern. A few lanterns were hung at the side of the stage, I believe those were some of the winning lanterns. Although to me they seemed quite ordinary!

At a further end of the tent, the children were kept busy with their own game… powder coloring. How thoughtful of the organizer, now the grown ups could go eat pomelo while the children test their creativity with the colored powder.

Soon, the clock striked 8:30pm and the VIP for the night arrived. He was none other than the MP for Puchong, YB Lau Yeng Peng. He was quickly ushered to the stage to give his speech. Secretly I tell you, it was a boring speech… but luckily there was still plenty of food left and the long queue had obviously disappeared by now. I quickly went for my light dinner before I headed over to MBA, Bandar Puteri for my late night badminton!

I planned to take very light dinner prior to playing badminton, but oh my goodness, the food were so tempting. I ended up having this wholesome plate. Only one plate la… If there was no badminton, I guess I would have taken at least 5 plates of that! 5 full plates, plus two cups of fresh orange juice. Hahaha, I love free food! Thanks, Bandar Bukit Puchong!

Aiks… I always get confused with all the Puchong names. I work in Pusat Bandar Puchong, and that’s probably the only Puchong town I know. If you tell me Pusat XX Puchong, Puchong XX, XX Puchong, I really dunno which is which!
