DIY: Stopping a toilet that runs
Oct 4th, 2007 by Neo
One of the toilet in my home has been running for the past few weeks. It’s really annoying and wastes water. My water bill has been on the increase, nearly RM50 for last month whereas I used to pay less than RM10 per month a few months earlier. Well, perhaps the running toilet was not the only culprit which contributed to the scary bill, my girlfriend forgot to properly tighten a water tap in a couple of occasions. That should be the main culprit… should I ask her pay the bill?
It’s time to fix this leaking toilet, once and for all.

I am not a DIY person, nor a plumber but this time I decided to give it a try in order to save a few bucks. I know that the water is leaking from the tank-fill tube at the end of the float arm. But after inspection, all seems good including the washers, so the only solution to me is to replace the entire tank-fill assembly with a new one which I got from a local hardware store for RM12.90. Cheap, right? A plumber at your house might charge you RM50 for this!
Just in case you wonder, I have dismantled the part of the tank-fill tube and float arm from the tank in the above picture.

The faulty float arm and fill tube lying beside the new one, together with the float ball. But I will need to dismantle this final piece of the assembly before I can put the new one in…

Half an hour of trying was enough to know there is no easy way to loosen the fixture that holds it without breaking the tank. The room for your hand is so limited inside the tank, and the fixture is so damn tight! Trust me, in certain situations it’s not good to be damn tight… unless you have the right tool.
Now, where did I place my pliers?
Nope, I can’t find a pliers with the correct size. Guess I have to allow a plumber earn some good cash this weekend.

Giving the plumber RM50 once is better than RM40 every month.
