DIY: Repair leaks in my roof
Oct 15th, 2007 by Neo
I was pretty good at fixing stuffs at home. You don’t believe me that I can really fix things? Read how I managed to fix my running toilet by getting a plumber whom I had to pay RM50.
Before I forgot, it took him 20 minutes only.
Now is the rainy season in Malaysia. It is almost certain that you will get some downpour in the afternoon and what I feared most actually happened. My roof leaks! It’s at a corner of the kitchen and the heavy downpour yesterday made half of my kitchen sink in a meter deep rain water! I may have exaggerated a little but it’s the best description I could think of… the mess left by the half an hour rain took me hours to clean up! Immediately I rang up a plumber.

I was fantasizing perhaps they would send a pretty and sexy plumber… I was totally bored at home alone. Maybe I could use the opportunity when all my girlfriends were out for something kinky. Hehe…
I was wrong. The plumber came within 30 minutes, and he was a fat ass! It took him less than 5 minutes to gauge the problem and quoted me RM450 to repair it. I told him to get lost!
Today, I quick quick called another plumber to come fix my leaking roof for me. WTF, he quoted me even higher than yesterday, RM550 this time! He told me all sorts of grandmother stories about who good he service is, how good quality is the material he’s going to use, and he gives one year warranty. I didn’t want to buy his stories but a quick glance at my clock showed that I didn’t have much choice. It was already 1pm and I know rain was going to come any minute now… I bargained the price to RM450.
I wasn’t happy but paying RM450 was a better choice than waiting for the tiring clean up should my kitchen float again!

That’s the plumber busy at work. How come all plumbers are big ass?
You may thing he was painting my roof, but he was not using any ordinary paint. He was actually using some sort of water repellent and sealant which looks like paint and you apply it using a paint brush too. He told me the small tin costed him RM100.
This leak sealant should seal off any small cracks on my roof and thus prevent rain water from running into my kitchen again. It dried in a short while and he applied another layer for maximum protection.

That’s it. All done in just over an hour. One thing I don’t understand is why they do not make the leak sealant in different colors. It will definitely look better in another color rather than the only-white color… although my roof is not really visible to other people other than myself and my neighbors.
Anyway, it was so easy to fix the roof… I could have DIY-ed it myself. I learned a lot from him, both from my own observations and from the small talks I had with him. Should you need a plumber, do remember to call me. I charge you RM450 for an hour’s job… haha! ![]()
