Protect your telephone line with a lightning arrestor
Oct 20th, 2007 by Neo
Due to the current rainy season, my telephone line had been particularly noisy. Streamyx connection had been intermittent and sometimes it was just so difficult to get a connection stay connected properly for more than 30 minutes. Called Telekom and they sent a technician a few days later after their attempt to fix it outside of the house didn’t produce any desired result. Mr Khairul who looks after Puchong area came and a quick check on the telephone wire confirmed our worst fear that a lightning might have struck and damaged the line.
Luck was on my side. There are backup wires in my telephone wire cabling. With two wires damaged, there are still two left for use. He quickly got down to do his job and before long it was all fixed up. However, he cautioned me that if the backup wires were damaged again I will have to re-wire and that of course will involve all the dirty stuff of hacking the wall, pulling some new wires, and etc… This got me alarmed and the next day immediately I bought a lightning arrestor at a nearby electrical store.

This is fairly cheap at RM13. RM1 discount after I asked for it from the boss. I needed someone to install it for me outside of the house. This thing is different from those you are using inside your house near the telephone line socket, because this one has to be installed outside of the house at the point where the telephone wire runs into the house. This will give your line the maximum protection should lightning struck.
The electrical shop boss introduced an electrician to me to install it.

It took him barely 10 minutes to get the job done. If you were adventurous enough, you should be able to do it all by yourself. There are only two wires to connect to… either this side or that side on the device. No electrical knowledge is necessary here I guess. You save yourself RM30 by doing it yourself.
Remember, to save yourself from spending RM300 to get an electrician to re-wire your telephone line, get a lightning arrestor now at RM13. DIY on the installation to save RM30. Good luck! ![]()
