Sarawak noodles, kampua and kompia
Apr 4th, 2008 by Neo
Last week, I went back to Sibu, Sarawak for some family matters. During my short stay, although I was very busy but I just had to make some time to indulge myself in some traditional Sarawak noodles. OK, that should be called kampua noodles, a Foochow noodle dish which is absolutely delicious and loved by not only everyone in Sarawak, but by many people from other parts of the world!
I know kampua noodles is not a stranger to most people now because it has been popularized by many bloggers, but I still want to show some pictures here.

That’s how it looked like. If you asked me on the taste, I would say it’s just average. The noodle was soft and tender, and luckily it’s not too salty or oily. I hate oily food. Anyway, this particular bowl of kampua noodles did retain the old flavors of kampua noodles. It brought back fond memories of how my parents brought me to town for a plate of kampua noodles.

I am not so much a soup person, unless it’s shark fin’s soup of course. But, it’s a different story for my brother, he likes soup so much that he had to order a special bowl of soup for us… but since I don’t like this kind of soup, it tasted too strong for me, he ended up finishing the whole big bowl all by himself. Haha…
Talking about shark fin soup, I would like to recommend you the super value for money restaurant which offers RM1 sharp fin soup at Bandar Puteri, Puchong. Go, check it out.

I know you will scold me if I didn’t bring back some kompia for you. Kompia is certainly unique to Sibu and a visit there without eating one is not forgivable! Although I was born and raised in Sibu, but I do not know where is the most authentic and best place for kompia in sibu. Many say it has to be this food place at Lorong Tiong Hua 26, where Mr. and Mrs. Yeo had been selling kompias for the past several decades.
I just had to pay this legendary place a visit. Although it was a rainy day, there was a steady stream of people leaving and coming in to this house turned into a kompia hideout place. Before long, our orders were taken and the much-awaited kompias were served.

There, the legendary foochow kompia which many locals touted as the authentic kompia in Sibu. It was served in dark-colored herbal broth with thin slices of pork. Oh yes, you can also order them without the pork. For me, I prefer the no-pork version.
Now, talking about “no pork”, I absolutely have to recommend you to watch the super funny video “no pork at RK house”. This video is so funny I warn you to be prepared to fall off your chair and roll on the floor laughing!

Before you roll on the floor, you read my post first. OK? These are the prices for those kompias, with or without the sliced pork. Not too pricey, and thus great for a quick afternoon bite.
Since there were many patrons, we had to make a move to give way to those who were waiting. Now, let me show you why Sibu is so famous for it’s flooding situation. A 30 minutes rain was enough to bring the water level in the drain to it’s banks. This is especially evident at flood prone areas such as Tiong Hua Road.

If it rained for another 30 minutes, we could have been forced to stay overnight there!
Now you can enjoy and laugh as loud as you want! Make sure you turn your computer’s volume to maximum level before playing the following video.
