Tamron AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di-II LD Aspherical lens
Jun 9th, 2008 by Neo
I believe you have enjoyed all the photos I brought to you from the Cocorich fashion show and model shoot last Saturday. I enjoyed the photo sessions, photography talks and of course browsing and checking out the many photography gears on promotion.
Many well know photography gear makers were there. Nikon, Samsung, Tamron, Philips and Sony were there among others. It was such a good opportunity to try out the lenses as the staffs were helpful and you can be sure the lenses were direct from the makers. I especially love the Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 lens!

This fast zoom lens is compact and felt good and solid in my hands. I tested a few shots on the models and the result was awesome thanks to the lens’ fast F/2.8 aperture! I fall in love instantly with the model but upon checking on the pricing, I had to make a wish that I would be able to buy this next year.
The fella quoted me cheapest RM1580, that will take me one whole year to save!

Another highly popular lens which I also like is the AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro. This tele-zoom lens covers a good focal length of up to 200mm. In a crowded event such as the recent fashion show where there were too many hungry photographers, you can take your stress-free photos at the back on a ladder or chair.
I love the fast maximum F/2.8 aperture and reach this lens offers!

AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro.
So, is it a tele or macro lens? Makes a lot of difference you know.
Jason,
It’s a tele lens. For macro, Tamron has a very good and highly rated macro lens, SP90mm.
Go Go Go~ Buy Buy Buy!
Wow so pricey. Pengsan…
dun kiamsiap now, I know you can afford it so just get it already!
Funny how if its a tele zooms, they added the word macro behind. Honestly, I am considering of getting a 2.8 fixed lens soon, as my kit lens F4 is pretty slow.
Anston,
Need to save for 1 to 2 years! The Nikon’s are much better, but need 3 years to save.
Che-Cheh,
Yes, very pricey!
Wuching,
I am hungry now, let’s go have some kampua and teh tarik shall we?
Jason,
Maybe it doubles as a Macro lens, but of course the quality will not be as good as a dedicated macro lens such as Tamron SP90. In fact Tamron SP90 can be used as a portrait lens - very good I hear.
So, what lens you are thinking of buying to replace your kit lens?
I would go for the 17-50 F2.8 first. I will check over in KL for the price.
I think could be lower? U are using a Canon right?
“I fall in love instantly with the model…”
Do you mean the lens or the girl? ;P
OK, joking aside, this lens is NOT expensive. It is value for money. Another good lens is Sigma 17-50mm, but I think it costs slightly more.
By the way, what camera do you own? If you use Nikon D80, you can consider Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. It should be around RM300 and you can get one now. However, if you use D40 or D60, you lose auto focus with this prime.
Josh,
I am using Nikon D80. The price should be able to get lower for Tamron 17-50 F2.8. Maybe at the range RM1400 to RM1500.
Khengsiong,
I mean the models, and of course the lenses. Haha…
Yes, you are correct, this is a value for money good lens. Definitely not expensive comparing this with the Nikon’s, as Nikkor Zoom Lens 17-55mm F2.8 costs about RM5000. At the Digital Fair recently in Sunway Pyramid, the Nikon booth was selling this beast at RM5500 I think.
I am using D80. And I have got that 50mm f/1.8 already. It’s a great lens for portrait especially.
What camera and lenses you are using?
wow, i think it must be very expensive?
If you want to get the Tamron this year, sell your Sigma la.
I own a Canon 350D with the following lenses:
)
- kit lens (not longer used
- Sigma 17-70
- Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
Hazel,
It’s value for money. Not expensive at all if you compare it with the equivalents of Nikon’s or Canon’s.
Khengsiong,
Oh no. The Sigma 18-200mm is a pretty good lens for general purpose shooting. Wide enough and tele enough for most situations.
Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 will be good for low light situations, such as indoor shoots.
i wannn!!! but SOooOo expensive!!
huei,
Go buy. This is a really nice lens because of the wide aperture throughout the whole zoom range. F2.8, very good and very sharp in low light situations.
