Andrew Boey from Nikonian Academy teaching portrait photography
Jun 13th, 2008 by Neo
Please say “hello” to our photography guru, Andrew Boey. If you don’t know him, then I believe you have not used a DSLR before, at least not a Nikon DSLR because Andrew is a very well known guru in photography, especially after he was appointed as a Nikon Product Evangelist in Malaysia. Among many other positions, Andrew is the Director Of Academy of Nikonian Academy of Malaysia.
Andrew shoots exclusively using Nikon cameras, and he has worked for big names which include Ford, BMW, Audi, JWT, and Armani. His areas of expertise are in portraiture, fashion, beauty and macro beauty photography.
Last week he gave a really nice albeit a little brief introduction to CLS (Creative Lighting System) and I was very glad I managed to catch the “lessons”.

You see, the beauty of going early to road shows like this is that you get to occupy a seat really close to the stage. I was so close to the stage that I could see his nostrils! Haha… especially with a 150mm zoom!

So, Andrew quickly introduced us to Nikon’s CLS, what are the various types of speedlights and how you can make use of SB800 as the Commander to control other speedlights as slaves, before showing us how to set them up for taking nice portraits. He setup two speedlights on the stage for this purpose, and they were set to trigger off by flashes. But before he could say another word the flash on his hand fired off repeatedly because brothers on the floor just couldn’t wait to test! Too shutter hungry!
Andrew was blinded momentarily.

See, the flash was so bright! Speedlights from Nikon are superb. Canon stay far far behind, sorry Canon users.
Oh I hope that flash wasn’t triggered by me?! Yours truly was too eager to test too.
Before I forgot, Joe Loon, a professional photographer from Nikonian Academy was there to help. He was the big guy you see in the picture above. The model for the portraits was none other than Yuanie. Beautiful chick!

That was the final setup. One flash at the left back of the model, and another at top front behind a white satin umbrella. The center of the umbrella was pointed at the model’s face to create a nice triangle at her cheek, that’s what we were told.
OK, without further ado, let me show you the result.

Simply stunningly beautiful?! Didn’t you notice that nice upside-down triangle at her right cheek? Oh well, it’s all because of the tips from Andrew Boey, Nikon’s CLS and of course because we have a beautiful model.
Tempted to learn more about portrait photography? No problem, you can do so at Nikonian Academy, and of course you can learn much more than that as their courses include Night Photography, Creative Lighting System, Night Photography and even Swimsuit Photography!
Oh, I don’t work for them. I only hope I can get a free class from them. OK hor, Andrew?

abeku,
Haha, of course Canon has its own strength too. You want to see more photos of the model - Yuanie? No problem, I should have many more photos of her. I will post them up in a future post. Stay tuned.
Neo,
You ‘chop off’ the model’s hands liao…
khengsiong,
Never mind, as long as she’s happy and I am happy!
hmmmm i wonder if Canon has something similar @_@ or probably i am not exploring enough.
satkuru,
You mean the Nikon’s Creative Lighting System? I am not too familiar with Canon, but I think it’s possible. Use Canon’s 550/580EX as the master while the slave can be another 550/580EX or the 420/430EX.
