Cheap alkaline batteries for DSLR external flash
Jun 14th, 2008 by Neo
If you wonder what are the batteries you should use for your DSLR’s external flash unit, then let me show you my findings. I have been using Energizer alkaline batteries in the past and I really must say that they are very good and reliable. On my Nikon speedlight SB800, a fresh set of Energizer can usually last 400 to 500 shots. Of course, if I wanted faster refresh time of about 1 to 2 seconds, then I have to change the batteries after about 200 shots.
Well, sometimes you need fast flash refresh time because you want to shoot 5 shots in a second in order to capture all the beautiful moments.

However, ever since I found out about the existence of Tesco’s extra long life alkaline batteries, I have been happily using them because although they can’t last as long but they are really value for money! They can serve me fast refresh time on my speedlight for about 150 shots, as compared to Energizer’s 200 shots.
But, do you know how much 4xAA Tesco’s extra long life alkaline batterie cost? RM2.49 only. That’s why I bought not one but two packs today… Got big events tomorrow and I foresee I might use two packs of the batteries!

Oh, of course if you are more hard working, you can use the rechargeable ones. They work equally well and is certainly more environmental friendly.

you use them for your dildos onot?!
Normally I will buy energizer lol
Maybe next time I can try tesco brand
I use Duracell (in Perth), everything else is too expensive, especially Energiser. It costs about a dollar each (battery), but lasts fairly long. Would be better off investing on rechargeables for flash. Most Ni-MH with over 2000mAH power is easily available now and will save you from burning a hole in your pockets.
How many shots you can take depends on the strength (intensity) of the flash. Your statement is not ’scientific’ enough!
Comparing, for example, shots taken at ISO 100 and ISO 800, all other factors are the same. You can certainly take more flash shots when ISO is set to 800.
wuching,
Dildos I guess will require a very long lasting battery pack because you need it to last for a day at least. Hahaha…
keeyit,
Energizer is most widely used here I guess. Everybody uses Energizer.
Raymond Chan,
Rechargeables are perhaps good for the environment, but will it really save you from burning a wider hole than the RM2.50 batteries pack from Tesco? I haven’t tried Duracell for ages though.
Khengsiong,
Oh yes, my statement isn’t scientific enough and I don’t have statistics to prove it also.
But on average, those are my findings. I found Tesco’s batteries are cheap and last slightly less than those from Energizer’s. I believe many professional photographers use them also. The other day I had a glimpse that Ted Adnan’s assistant was holding a couple packs of Tesco batteries (for their Nikon speedlights).
More on Ted Adnan in a later post.
Rechargeable one for more environmental friendly, of coz!
