Fort A Famosa
Oct 9th, 2008 by Neo
Port Dickson is a really boring place if you didn’t like the beach but now the problem was that the beach was dirty… or well-polluted as some people call it. However, one of our tour member suddenly came up with a brilliant suggestion. Do you know what did he suggest? — Why don’t we drive to Malacca as I miss the nice food at Jonker Street?!!

We went to Pasaraya The Store to get some necessities for the night
I nearly fainted hearing that because it would mean another hour’s drive! We just arrived Port Dickson lar wei!
Hahaha… although we were tired but guess what, early next morning we did ventured into Malacca instead of going to watch sunrise! Now let me ask you, can we get sunrise in Port Dickson?
So, where do you think we went first in Malacca? Haha, we played tourist this time and decided to visit none other than Fort A Famosa.

Oh… that’s the ruins of Fort A Famosa which attracted millions of tourists to Malacca every year! Nice or not?

There were a few huge cannons surrounding the fort and they were good for taking pictures. In the picture you can also see the dude with the iguana. You pay him RM3 to take pictures with his iguana, nope, not free.

Beautifully decorated trishaw were also aplenty. Most of them came complete with DVD players, and amplified loud speakers! They were much louder than my car’s speakers!

If you don’t already know, A Famosa literally means “The Famous” in Portuguese. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia. The remains of the fort, the tiny gate which you see so often in pictures is called the Porta de Santiago.

Since A Famosa is such a popular historical place, I think a few more pictures is a must.
If you have never been to this place before you may not know that there’s another structure up at the hill top behind the A Famosa gate!

It was tiring climbing the stairs, but it was worth it. The view up there looking at the square below was superb. It was quite breezy up there at the hill top too!

Some old architectures behind the walls.

Please tell me what are these? I didn’t stop to read, but I think they aren’t in English.
Hope you like the A Famosa tour. Stay tuned for more pictures of the great Malacca, aka Melaka.

KNizam,
More pics coming soon for sure.
Che-Cheh,
Canon or Nikon?
J@s0n,
Too bad not models to shoot that day!
keeyit,
Yes, it was very hot especially at Jonker Street. Yes, we had the famous Malacca chicken rice, it was expensive though.
en_me,
Initially I wanted to take a pic with the iguana, but it looks a little geli. Haha…
Khengsiong,
No ler, I didn’t know her but I took her photo with the cannon. I think it’s nicer to have her in the pic to add some life to the photo.
Aduh wrong spelling.. hahaha
Port Dickson is at the west coast. Sunrise is at the east. I think you can get spectacular sunset, but not sunrise.
head stones. they used to be laid flat on the chapel floor but raised upright at the turn of the century to protect them.
Che-Cheh,
So, have you bought a DSLR? Canon or Nikon?
Weilian,
Yupe, thanks for the confirmation.
can,
Oh, those are the head stones. Thanks for the info.
Not yet. But I will go for Nikon.
Che-Cheh,
So, which Nikon model you are looking at and interested in?
Not yet decide. What do you suggest? My budget RM3k below…hehe
Malacca is surely a very historic place and it is well preserved.
I been to Mallaca before but didn’t get visit A-famosa.. And thanks for the nice pictures of A-Famosa!!
You know what? Of all places in Melaka, I really think A Famosa is the most uninteresting. Sorry but that’s my opinion. Maybe others will like it. I prefer a walk down Jonker Street – it’s a lovely place with antique shops and I just feel so relaxed there.
Che-Cheh,
The budget is too low, but perhaps you can get Nikon D80 with that. If not, then you can get D60. But, I would suggest you to allow more budget for at least Nikon D300. My opinion la.
ivy,
Yes, I agree. Malacca is hot!
victor,
Now you have just had a tour of Malacca!
foongpc,
For A Famosa is interesting if you relate it to the history, but I guess most people go there to take pictures only, just like myself. Jonker Street is not too bad too, we did go there for a walk and to savor the infamous Chicken Rice.
[...] after For A Famosa where do you think we went to? Naturally, we went to have a walk at the infamous Jonker Walk. I [...]
Never been to malacca before. May be should do so the next time I stop at KL.
I’m sorry but I’ve to take some of your pictures without your permission for my project and hope you don’t mind. lmao! You know, the first time I went A Famosa was in my age 5, it looks really creepy to me back then. Now it just a crappy old building. lmao!
