Chicken Rice Ball
Oct 14th, 2008 by Neo
So, what should we have for dinner in Malacca? Immediately, we thought of chicken rice, but of course not any ordinary chicken rice, but it has to be Chicken Rice Ball! People say you have to try this cuisine if you were in this historical town in Malaysia, otherwise you have not really “tasted” Malacca.
This particular branch is located in Jonker Street, and it’s a perfect place for us to stop for dinner after an afternoon’s tiring walk.

Please don’t ask me if Famosa Chicken Rice Sdn Bhd serves the best Chicken Rice Ball in town or not because I am not from Malacca, and this was the first time I had this dish, or perhaps second time, I can’t really remember. However, from the look of it, this place must be pretty famous, there are pictures of famous people dining here.

They include Miss Malaysia of some years back, some other beauty pageant participants, some hosts of some cooking programs on TV from Taiwain, or Hong Kong I can’t recall, Chinese party leaders, famous political leaders, and some other important people.
Ah, of course the infamous Neo of Hot Screensaver was there too! Oh, they did take a picture of me but not sure if they are going to replace that old hunk’s pic with mine later!

That’s the famous flavored Chicken Rice Ball, they are flavorsome because they are cooked with chicken stock. Quite fragrant too. Each one of them is about the size of a table tennis ball… oh no, perhaps more of the size of a golf ball. Haha… The waitresses say, they are best taken with boiled chicken flavored with sauce and sesame oil. The rice itself is best taken with pounded chilli-sauce.

Anyway, apart from making it easier to pop the rice ball into your mouth, I didn’t find anything too different from the ordinary chicken rice. One word, too much over-hyped!
Luckily Famosa Chicken Rice Sdn Bhd serves other delicious cuisines as well. So we had roast pork, steamed chicken, fish ball soup, and some greens too to compliment the Chicken Rice Balls.

i had it there also. but sadly it wasnt good, the rice was soggy, other shops in malacca are better than this. i guess its the advertisement?
em…i have never tried this before…
i patronize da one at da corner lot one…forget da name already
my mami names this dish as bola-bola chicken rice
I also always go to the other older corner shop opposite to this, beside the bridge one. I have tried this once, quite nice.
ee..they din wash hands before rolling those rice balls wan!
I’ve been to this shop and the one at the corner one. This shop is better. Hehe
I think the most famous one is the corner shop near the bridge. However, famous people don’t go there because it is crowded and no air-con.
You went last Saturday ke? I saw a guy with DSLR whom I thought might be a blogger coz keep shooting his food.
xin,
Yes, it’s very good. I think the normal chicken rice there was much better. Anyway good experience too.
annant,
Bola-bola chicken rice! Haha, your mami is very cute!
mang0,
Looks like I need to give the other one a try next time!
wuching,
They use machine to do that… now everything also sophisticated, where got use hands?
Che-Cheh,
Okay, let’s try the other shop next time.
Khengsiong,
Neo is pretty famous too, I know.
hcfoo,
That must be me! why you didn’t come over to say hi?
I also find the chicken rice balls overhyped. Anyway, nowadays you don’t need to go all the way to Melaka for these balls. You can find it in Petaling Jaya too. Looks like after reading your blog, they won’t put your picture up there! LOL
foongpc,
You can find the balls at my place too,… self made. Hahaha… okay, seriously, where about in Petaling Jaya?
I think the shop is called My Kitchen. It’s at Sunway Mas, next to Aman Suria.
foongpc,
Thanks for the info… will give it a shot next time I am in Sunway Mas.
Never tried before. But as you said, it should be taste like ordinary chicken rice. Nothing special.
next time if u’re in the mood for real hainam chicken rice balls (the tasty ones, not the commercialized one), find a local malaccan and ask him/her to direct u to the famous chicken rice ball in Batu Berendam… u’ll crave for more..
and it’s a hell lot cheaper!
