Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival
Oct 20th, 2008 by Neo
Oh yes, I went to Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival, undoubtedly one of the hottest photography and imaging event of the year. This event was scheduled for two days, last Saturday and Sunday but I only managed to go on the second day, and that was only in the late afternoon.

This time it took place at Berjaya Times Square. Weird, because in my opinion this place is not very happening. They should do it at One Utama, Mid Valley Convention Center, or KLCC (Kuala Lumpur Convention Center). At least, got more chicks.
Anyway, I arrived late, and the place was packed with photography enthusiasts, and people looking for photography gear and accessories bargains.

Lots of photos were put up at the photo exhibition section. I guess you can learn a lot by looking at how the professionals compose their photos, for instance.

Underwater case from Olympus. Made with durable polycarbonate material, it’s waterproof up to 40 meters.
On the left is a flash power grip. It’s purpose is to supplement the power in electronic flash, to facilitate high-speed flash charging and to extend the number of shots which you can take with the flash.

The winners from Tamron portraits photography contest. Hey, I thought we have winners in Winnie Oh, Lyndie Ong, and Elaine Tang?
One of the best deal I saw at the festival was an offer from Sigma. The all-rounder and highly popular Sigma lens, the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM was being offered at RM999 only. Only a few months ago, I bought it at way over RM1k!

The Kata camera bags. Of course for most photographers, they would prefer Lowepro bags for their superior quality. I was eying for the Lowepro Fastpack 200 which was selling at RM333 there. Not sure if it was a good offer, what say you? The saleswoman said at normal days, they retail it at RM400 plus.
Nope, I didn’t buy it.

Wow, huge zoom lens from Canon.
Certainly can’t afford this one. Maybe its price is enough to fund for half of the price of an imported car?
The highlight of the day surely had to be the appearance of Amber Chia, well known international model, at roughly 4pm. She was the reason many photographers brought their huge lenses, flash guns, and of course ladders!

No, I am not so crazy in her, so I didn’t bring any ladder… not that I have one anyway.
Prior to her appearance on the stage, while she was walking in with Andrew Boey, while all the hungry photographers were waiting anxiously at stage armed in their best gears; she spotted me and came to say “hi”, and that was when I did a few “private” shots with her!

Unfortunately, I didn’t get any special pass from her. It was quite impossible and required great strength and determination to shoot nice photos in a packed floor like this. So many photographers and so limited space… Man, mind your elbow please.

once i was at a camera shop, and saw da price of a donnowhat lens la, retailed at 4999bucks, only i knew that a lens can really cost a bomb!
wow.. you got a better view there. I was at KLPF on last saturday but didnt catch any picture. The event is not so happening. Only the photo exhibition is interested to me.
I am now eyeing on that Canon EF 100mm f/2.0 USM lens. Any comment on that lens, Neo?
photographer ’s fav..
A few private shots of Amber Chia? How come only one photo here? : )
It sounds like Amber Chia knows Neo, the world famous photographer ;P
Lowepro is famous but I am not sure if they have better quality. It used to be the only game in town, but today there are many more.
I personally own a Crumpler Sinking Barge backpack. It’s design is such that I can take out the camera without laying the bag on the floor. The Crumpler also has a stylist design.
Before buying the Crumpler, I had considered Tamrac Adventure. This backpack has lots of slots for keeping accessories, and one can attach a tripod on the outside. The downside is it is more awkward to take out the camera, and the bag doesn’t look as great as the Crumpler.
annant,
Yes, DSLR and SLR lenses and accessories are really expensive, especially those from the original brands such as Nikon, Canon and Sony. RM4999 should be a pretty good lens. The third party lenses and accessories are usually much cheaper. For people like me, I can only afford Tamron and Sigma.
malaysia travel,
No good views. In fact, I merely point and shoot.
Weilian,
Canon EF 100mm f/2.0 USM lens… I am not so familiar with Canon lenses. But, 100mm… for what? Portrait ah?
cbenc12,
Yupe!
foongpc,
One is enough, can’t show too many photos or the server might overload.
Khengsiong,
I think Lowepro is still the favorite among photographers. Crumpler Sinking Barge backpack looks pretty good to me… a quick check on this site http://photo.net/equipment/bags/sinkingbarge seems to highlight a few shortcomings though.
I especially need a water bottle holder which unfortunately doesn’t exist in this backpack.
I visited a similar photography show in London a year or so ago, i loved it but hated the crowds.
Theyb really are worth the effort to get to if you can as they do show you whats new in the world of photography and like you say you do get the opportunity to try some portrait shots with models (if you have sharp enough elbows of course.)
thanks for sharing your day with us.
Learn anything from the event?
I was there too !!!!
yeah, the photographers were sure HUNGRY !! Gosh….
why u no buy one for me?
Neo,
I keep my non-leaking water bottle in the upper compartment. Not perfect, but acceptable.
Some photographers shun Lowepro exactly because it is famous. Carrying a Lowepro and you are telling potential criminals, “Expensive gears inside.” LOL
Kate,
Yes, I especially like the opportunity to check out the new gears hands on.
keeyit,
Yes, I learned that the Sigma 18-200mm lens has dropped price to RM999!
Robin,
You didn’t join the model shooting?
wuching,
No money ler.
Khengsiong,
You are correct, but Crumpler and Tamrac are popular brands also now. Better use your old school bag then, haha!
[...] I am not sure if you have seen a light box before. But I stumbled light boxes among some other gadgets during the recent Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival. [...]
Oh, u were there ler! Because of the photography contest or the leng luis? lolz
The Sigma lens 18-200mm really price falls alot from day 1 it launched till now
So many photographer ah nowaday..
Anston,
Obviously because of the photography festival, and partly because of the lengluis. But didn’t manage to catch any of them, too crowded and timing wrong.
Abeku,
Yes, because DSLR pricing become cheaper and cheaper.
Wow. This is so far the best blog I have seen about Kuala Lumpur photography. very good details and many graphics. Thats very nice. I feel like i don’t know anything about cameras when all this camera technical Lingo comes in. I should have been at this kuala lumpur event at least to educate myself more.
Lovely post.
wow! so many ppl!! got sales ar on camera products?
Have any idea how much is the underwater casing?
