Wedding dinner in Kuala Kangsar
Mar 17th, 2009 by Neo
Dial-up connection was really killing me. I couldn’t upload anything but a picture of a Ladybird puff toy and a few words of wisdom during my few days stay in Kuala Kangsar. Anyway, it still got the job done after a couple disconnections… line wasn’t very stable and perhaps I opened too many pages.
I was in Kuala Kangsar over the weekend for a relative’s wedding dinner. Let me show you some pictures to cheer up your Tuesday!

The newly wed!
I haven’t attended a wedding dinner for quite a long time already, so when I was invited for the dinner I totally jumped at it; although I dislike the long journey. And the high toll rates.

As you can see in this picture, the wedding was held at a huge community hall, not the usual grand restaurant at a 5-star hotel. There isn’t a lot of nice restaurants in Kuala Kangsar for weddings like this, and so if you need to fit in anything more than 20 tables, you have only this hall to go for.
This place was nice but it wasn’t air-conditioned. That’s the major drawback as I found the need to hold on to a pile of tissue paper while having my dinner. Haha… one hand on my DSLR, one hand wiping dripping sweat.

Music was loud… in fact too loud to my liking. This made it difficult for us to hear each other; but I quite like the performance on the stage. The girl was very energetic and she performed some hot dances… more pictures of her later.
It was pretty challenging for a newbie like me to capture nice pictures in such a hall. People were moving around… and the ceiling was too high for bounce light. Direct light produced harsh shadows and sometimes overexposing the front objects. Thus, after a few attempts, I turned off my flash, and used higher ISO instead.

This community hall is located adjacent to a Chinese temple. This is perhaps the only Chinese temple the Chinese go to in Kuala Kangsar.
On second though on the photography problem, I guess a diffuser dome (the round type) might help in situations like this?

Food was mediocre and nothing to shout about. Perhaps the best dish of the night was the prawns, not too sure how it was done though.
Oh, I like this young girl on the stage, her singing was very sweet and I just had to do a few shots of her. Haha… I was perhaps the only photographer daring enough to shoot her from such a near distance. What happen to Kuala Kangsar folks?! She was jumping and running enthusiastically on the stage… that’s quite a sight! Yooo…

Neo, you didn’t like the long journey, the high toll rate, the lousy food, the loud music, the non existence of air con. Looks like you didn’t enjoy yourself at this wedding dinner except the young girl singing and dancing on stage. Haha! So is she worth all those long journey, high toll rate, lousy food, loud music and no air-con? LOL!
foongpc,
Of course, she’s worth it… 10 times the effort even! Hahaha!
neo is aiming mui mui chai now… fellow mui mui chai readers… beware!
Haiya… that’s my hometown. No wonder you said you’d got no broadband.
Kuala Kangsar is just 3 hours from KL. Not exactly long journey. In Sarawak, I suppose a drive from Kuching to Limbang takes a whole day.
Curry mee in my hometown is yummy. Have you tasted it?
P/S There are many temples in Kuala Kangsar, but the one you went to is the grandest.
Are you going to show us more of this mui mui photos?
neo! sikit lagi can see her panty le.. haha.. or maybe u did but u din show out : blerk.
Well, their wedding reception is different from what we have here, but i found out lots of places are still doing so. Luckily you had enough tissues with you! hahaha
Neo, my in-law also staying at KK. You really can’t expect much thing from the small town..Btw, nice photo..
errrrr… that’s my dad’s hometown
I went to Kuala Kangsar every year at least twice … Chinese New Year and Ching Ming… Hey KhengSiong, you r from Kuala Kangsar… which curry mee that you talking about … near where?
haven’t been to kuala kangsar…
i attended some charity dinner in such hall too,
but air-conditioned la…
nic,
Young girls wanna become as hot as hot screen saver, faster come here!
Khengsiong,
Curry mee?… Are you referring to the laksa? The one I tried was Laksa Pak Ngah, behind Tsung Hwa Secondary School. I was told it’s the most famous in Kuala Kangsar.
Che-Cheh,
I have a few more photos of her, wanna see?
goolooloo,
You wanna see her undies? Wahaha…
dragoncity,
Haha, true. Not sure if Khengsiong agrees with this or not?
TZ,
Perhaps he’s talking about the laksa.
annant,
Lucky you, otherwise you would have became a wet ant.
wuah! for a split second there I thot you were getting married again!
Neo,
No, I am not referring to laksa. It’s Chinese style, can be dried or souped. But I personally prefer dried mee.
There are a few locations. The easiest to find are the stores in pasar. A very good one is in the village near train station, which we call ???. However, most of the stores open only in the morning.
(Also answered TZ liao…)
I would agree with dragoncity that the restaurants at my hometown aren’t that great, but then you go there to eat hawker food or in kopitiam. Other than curry mee, another yummy food is beef ball noodle ???.
wuching,
I wish I could!
Khengsiong,
I see… the village near the train station I was told is called Kampung Lal Singh, or sounds something like that… if we were talking about the same village. Need to try the curry mee someday!
Khengsiong, yeah.. the beef ball noodle is good… = )
And also fried chicken skin is so niceeee…..
Kampung? My kampung got those xiao mei to dance and sing also
dragoncity,
Haven’t tried the beef ball noodle and fried chicken skin. But I guess I don’t quite fancy beef and chicken skin anyway.
keeyit,
Where is your kampung? Next time take some pics to show us.
When is your turn to get married?
so rare to see the theme being red and pink. the muimui seemed to be really happening!
Neo,
Beef ball noodle is just a name. Decades ago the store started out with beef balls, and the name stuck. Since many Chinese didn’t eat beef, they later introduced pork balls, but nobody bother to rename it.
You can eat wantan mee minus the wantan. Similarly, you can eat beef ball noodle minus the beef balls.
The village near the train station is unofficially called foh che tao (train head) by the Chinese.
