Exploring Cameron Highlands and its Natural Beauty
Jun 16th, 2010 by mayan
Taking advantage of the recent Vesak weekend, I decided to explore the popular hill-resort of Cameron Highlands with a couple of friends.
Getting There
From Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands is a leisurely 3 to 3.5 hour drive up north. To get there, head northwards using the North-South Highway, and exit the highway at Tapah. Next take a left turn towards Cameron Highlands, and expect to drive for about forty five minutes to an hour, depending on the traffic condition and your driving style. Take heed however that the roads are uphill, treacherous and filled with speeding heavy vehicles, thus it is best that you drive slow and safe to ensure your safety!
We reached out first destination, the Hutan Lipur Kuala Woh about ten minutes after exiting at Tapah. To reach this recreational forest, keep an eye out for the signboard that denotes Hutan Lipur Kuala Woh which would need you to turn right off the main path. The recreational forest boasts the likes of a suspended bridge, hot water springs, picnic areas and decent hiking spots. We spent fifteen minutes here before resuming on our journey.
Lata Iskandar Waterfall
Barely twenty minutes later, we arrived at our second scheduled stop, the breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls called the Lata Iskandar. There is no way you could miss this amazing waterfall, as it is pretty much by the roadside, and you would realize a queue of cars parked by the road as you approach the falls. We parked the car to enjoy this scenic beauty, and found ourselves blessed with some exceptional pictures that made our stop worthwhile! There were also plenty of stalls there selling many types of unique souvenirs such as wooden slippers, pots, vases, umbrellas, wind chimes and hats. Given the beauty of the falls, it was a struggle to get back into the car and continue our journey, nevertheless we forced ourselves to do so, in our bid to reach Cameron’s by lunchtime.
Another twenty minutes passed before we reached the first town of Cameron Highland’s, Ringlet, and another ten minutes before we reached the town of Tanah Rata where our hotel was located. This time we stayed in Century Pines Resort & Hotel. After checking in and parking our luggage, we got hold of a map of Cameron’s from the hotel lobby and started exploring the scenic town.
Brinchang, Strawberry Galore
Driving up towards the next town of Brinchang, we stopped at a spot called the Strawberry Corner, a place that strawberry-lovers should not miss! Here you can not only pluck your own strawberries, you could find all kinds of items that are related to strawberries (both edible and non-edible). For those looking for edible strawberry items, you could find fresh and dried strawberries, jam, ice cream, juice, and not forgetting the delicious chocolate-coated strawberries! And there are strawberry-shaped souvenirs such as magnets, pillows, bags, slippers, alarm clocks, and even umbrellas to choose from. Definitely a strawberry-world, this one!
For the Romantics Bargain Hunters
Next we carried on to Uncle Sam’s Farm, a spot where you could find fresh plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits, all at highly competitive prices. When I say competitive, I mean cheap! You could get two bunches of roses for RM10, and when you consider that each bunch holds at least ten flowers, you would undoubtedly agree with me!
Fresh Vegetables
As we drove further up, we reached the Vegetable Market, a place where not only can you obtain the freshest of vegetables and fruits from the highlands, you also discover a host of other edible items such as fried seafood, ayam percik and Malay delicacies all at extremely affordable prices. We struggled not to purchase everything that we see as it was certainly tempting to do so!
As we left the market, it was almost dark, thus we returned to our hotel in Tanah Rata before spending the rest of the evening resting in the room, enjoying the ultimately refreshing air that was calming and soothing.
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel the next morning, we explored the central park that was situated right next to the bus station in Tanah Rata before proceeding to check out of the hotel.
Bharat & Boh Tea Plantations
Our drive down was a lot more relaxing than the drive up, and we managed to stop at two tea plantations on the way down to Tapah.
The first was Cameron Bharat Plantations, one that was located right next to the main road, and also had a decent tea-house that offered refreshing tea, scones and cakes.
We made a short stop here, took a few gorgeous shots of the place before continuing to the next plantation, the Boh Plantation. This plantation goes on for miles and miles and certainly rates highly in terms of beauty and scenic ratings! Driving up to the Boh Tea Factory was definitely an eye-opening experience, and the breathtaking scenery that we experienced along the way is something that we will cherish for the rest of our lives!
The visit to Boh’s plantation marked the end of our visit to Cameron Highlands as we resumed our journey home to Kuala Lumpur. Although this trip was short, it was undoubtedly sweet and has made me understand why Cameron Highland’s is one of the nation’s top tourist attractions! Like Arnie says, I’ll be back!

I also went to Cameron Highlands recently. However, I met up with my parents and sister from the North, so I took the Simpang Pulai route.
I must go BOH Tea Plantation every time when I go Cameron Highlands with my university friends. It is really a good place for a bunch of friends to hang out together.
