Palate Palette

Feeling bored of our usual eating haunts, my partner and I decided to be more adventurous. We found out about Palate Palette and decided to give it go. A lot of blogs were rather positive about it so I went with certain expectations.
Certainly looks interesting
Arriving at the place, I see that it’s quite packed but we were lucky enough to get a table and the waitress promptly handed us the menu. As we had a rather heavy lunch, both of us decided to just order one salad and one main course.
After placing the order, I had a good look around the place. A two-storey building, the top storey is more for having drinks and chat with a bar counter and sofas while the ground floor caters to hungry patrons.

From the outside, it looks like a really trendy place with garden lights, chairs and tables of various designs, sculptures and drawings on the wall (ceilings too!) and colourful lamps. A place where creativity rules, you could say.
These are on the ceilings, I kid you not!

The table next to ours was made from an old sewing machine with a glass top and I thought that was really cool but I thought that the decor felt a tad overdone. Like trying too hard so I told my partner I would rate this place about 6 over 10 without taking into account food and service yet.
And when our drinks arrive just ten minutes later, I thought hey, maybe I will bump up the rating. They didn’t taste half bad.

However, I changed my mind after our food came. The food portion is really small for the prices they charged and I can honestly say that it’s certainly not the best lasagne we’ve had.
Chicken Lasagne
The shrimp (I wish they would call prawns ‘prawns’!!) and avocado salad is something I’ve not had before but it made me wish I ordered something else. Six salad leaves arranged around seven prawns covering a mound of mashed avocado is what I got. The taste? Nothing to shout about.
That’s right, I counted the leaves and the prawns
It made me realise that we would need to add on so I called the waitress and ordered Pasta Primavera Marinara. At this point, I mentally rated it a 5 over 10. By the time we finished the lasagne and the salad though, the pasta have not made an appearance.

So I called the waitress over and asked her to check. Ten minutes later, she came over to say they have not started on the pasta but it will be done in 5 minutes’ time. Unless I want to cancel that?
I told her I will wait for it and cynically wondered if they will be using Prego or Leggo brand to have the pasta ready in 5 minutes. But since it only came after another 15 minutes, I guess they make the sauce from scratch?
Tasting it, again, I would say about average. I did have the displeasure of biting into a few strands of fettuccine that were undercooked with hard ends. By the end of the meal, my personal rating of the place was down to 3 over 10 taking into account the decor, food (taste, portion and price) and service.
It may be that it was just not fated for us to have a positive dining experience, as I chatted with a lady who told me she was a regular (there must be something good to keep her coming back!) and a group of customers patiently wait for a table.
As for the three questions I usually ask about a place:
- Would I bring friends there? – I don’t think so.
- Would I recommend the place? – Well, you may have better luck, so feel free to try it out. You may just become a regular there, as well.
- Would I go back? – Maybe for drinks but food? Not likely…
